Medical Identification Card

A medical identification card is primarily used to convey specific information about a person's health to physicians and other medical personnel

. It is used to tell about a person's health conditions, medical history, or anything else that may affect medical treatment. Each year, there are over 100 million people that visit emergency rooms each year, in the United States alone. If the patient is unconscious or not able to communicate their health conditions, they doctor may not know how to treat them properly. If the doctor doesn't know about certain conditions, they may not know the way in which to treat the patient as they need to be treated. When a physician is aware of a patient's conditions or medical history, they will be better able to provide the proper care and avoid any potentially fatal drug interactions.

You can often receive medical cards, medical identification bracelets, or necklaces that contain the pertinent health information through various private companies. Some of the medical identification cards have computer chips that tell the physician's everything related to the patient's health history. The American Medical Association says that any type of medical identification system needs to have a tag that is well made, and able to be seen easily and clearly. It should also have the caduceus symbol, so that it is recognized as a medical accessory. It should also have a medical identification card that tells important medical information, as well as the names of the person's doctor, family, and friends.

Medical cards should be used by any person that has a medical condition, implant, allergy, or on medication that could be life threatening if an emergency happens. This is essential to allowing the right people to know about any condition that may need to be addressed when an emergency happens, and makes it known the medications that are being used so that drug interactions are lessened. Most medical cards are constructed of hard plastic, and usually contain the following information:

Name and address

Date Issued

Medical history

Primary physicians name and phone numbers

Date of Birth

At least three emergency contacts with phone numbers for each

Current medications

GP details

Blood group

Using a medical identification card can make a world of difference if an emergency arises. If you are involved in an emergency, and cannot communicate, the card can tell paramedics, dentists, and physicians what they need to know to be able to treat you in the best possible way.

Since people who are older generally take a greater amount of medications than younger people do, they should always carry medical identification cards as well. This can keep any emergency personnel apprised of medications or conditions so they can know the way to treat you if you are ever involved in an emergency.

Since medical emergencies can never be predicted, carrying a medical identification card at all times can make it possible to get the right care when it is needed.
