Meet HAL The Mad Computer

It is a classic. Sure, we've seen movies like 'Terminator' and intelligent grumbling androids in 'Star Wars,' but there has never been anything like Asminov's and Kubrick's HAL. '2001, a Space Odyssey' was many movies in one, but the closest thing that comes to mind in regards to HAL's murderous spaceship takeover is 'Alien'. '2001' was in large part a horror movie and a serious warning to us all.

Could HAL, a murderous paranoid computer actually come into existence? The answer, as far as I'm concerned, is a definitive 'yes,' and we must diligently guard against it happening. The biggest mistake that most people make regarding HAL, both within the movie and as viewers, is that HAL is, or somehow becomes 'conscious.' When dealing with computer programs, however, consciousness is clearly not a relevant issue. The problem is that we program computers to model us- in many ways a program is a direct recording of our brain processes.

Today there is not much danger in that. As long as programs are merely patterned after our brain processes, they will do us no harm. But as programming becomes ever more sophisticated- and it will- more and more of our 'mind' processes are going to be programmed as well.

This includes judgment, discernment, preferences, physical response, and all the other skills of our psychic-nervous system. Unfortunately, our neurosis, psychosis, and other mental disorders are going to slip into programs as well, and programs will someday need to be legally controlled and tested for safety before being released to the public. This actually is not science fiction. It is already showing up in certain types of programs. And deliberate programs, such as games where warriors slaughter each other or people drive around in cars getting points for hitting pedestrians, need to be taken seriously. Someday computer programs- not us- will most likely be driving our cars and checking on our children.
