When the tools and rags are all tucked away you'll be planning the next task.

Begin with tools. On-line or in an actual book found at libraries or bookstores, there's usually a list of good basic tools to keep handy. An adjustable wrench (might also be called a spanner) and channel type pliers are often used. Houses should include needle nose pliers when sold. You need a pair. A screw driver that has a number of sizes and shape options will be useful for almost every repair job.

Other projects might require a pipe wrench, if you are buying not borrowing buy a better quality. You may also need a ratchet and a deep socket, a few sizes of Allen wrenches and a seat wrench. It makes sense to borrow some of these tools from other DIY folks. You may get free advice or a helping hand.

Depending on your repair job you might need a bucket that will fit below the sink trap, as well as some rags and newspaper. Memorize this: turn the valve in a clockwise direction to stop the water.

If your job will require you to be lying in the cupboard under the sink, take everything out. Everything. Lay down a towel. The cupboard can be cleaned later and most of the fascinating collection thrown out.

If this challenge is your first, allow yourself at least double the time you expect. There's no point in rushing through fixing the tap if the rush is going to cause a drip that's worse than when you started. Plumbers are expensive. Just take your time and you'll get all the value you want for your money. As well, there's a feel good at the end that's much better than a bill.
