Mehrangarh Fort the pride of Jodhpur is for its majestic constructions

, brilliantly crafted and decorated palaces. This structural icon is the storehouse of the glorious history of the Rathore rulers who built it in the 14th century AD. The Mehrangarh Fort of Jodhpur located at the center of the city is spread over an area of 5 kilometers atop 125 meter on high hill. The walls of this are up to 36 meters high and 21 meters wide.

The grand structures, complex design, well fortification and labyrinth rampart make it one of the important Forts in Rajasthan which is visited by scores of tourists during their Jodhpur Tour. Inside the fort there are several brilliantly crafted and decorated palaces some of them are Moti Mahal (Pearl Palace), Phool Mahal (Flower Palace), Sheesha Mahal (Mirror Palace), Sileh Khana, and Daulat Khana. These palaces are living testimony of human craftsmanship which was prevalent during the royal era.

Some of the prominent attractions of Mehrangarh Fort are:

Moti Mahal The Pearl Palace' was built during the reign of King Sur Singh. It is Public Audience Hall where king meet his subjects. This palace is famous for is known for its beautifully carved latticed screens. This palace has five alcoves leading onto hidden balconies built for queens to listen court proceeding.

Sheesh Mahal is famous for its exquisite mirror work and an intricate mosaic of tiny fragments. Another most attractive feature of this palace is superimposition of brightly painted religious figures over the mirror work.

Phool Mahal is the most splendid palace of this fort which was made for enjoying pleasure. This private and exclusive chamber of pleasure was built by Maharaja Abhaya Singh. In this palace the Maharajas used to watch young women dancing under a ceiling of gold filigree.

Inside the Howdah Gallery one can see the exclusive display of howdahs which was used on the back of an elephant during elephant ride. Howdah is the two-compartment wooden seat tied to the back of an elephant. The front one was meant for the kings and the rear one was for the bodyguards.

The Palanquin Gallery is known for its exotic collections of palanquins which were used as a means of travel by the ladies of the royal families. Numerous decorated palanquins can be seen in this gallery.

In the Armory section tourists can see the exhibition of rare weapons of yesteryears. The display includes sword with handle in jade, silver, rhine horn, ivory, shields studded with rubies, emeralds and pearls, guns with gold and silver work on barrels and personal swords of emperors like Akbar, Timur and Khanda of Rao Jodha. And the Painting Gallery houses a rich compilation of Marwar paintings which showcases the artistic work of several artisans.
