Memory Foam Mattress Pressure Relief
Memory foam provides numerous benefits, but one of the most heralded is its ability to relieve pressure points
. It stems from the memory foam responding to body temperature and distributing pressure throughout the entire mattress.
When this material gets exposed to an increase in temperature, it softens. On the flip side, when the conditions are cooler, it firms up. This characteristic is referred to as viscoelasticity. If you were to lie down on a mattress, it will soften because of your body temperature. The result is that you will sink down into it so you don't feel pressure points.
Innerspring mattresses however are a different story. They do not respond to temperature and sink. Instead, they push back against your body. The problem is that our bodies aren't able to push back with the same amount of force, causing us to feel pressure from the mattress. The end result is that blood isn't able to circulate as freely, and we tend to toss and turn more often. This is particularly the case for side sleepers.
With memory foam, you won't toss and turn as much because circulation won't be cut off. The mattress doesn't bounce back against your body. Instead, it conforms to it.
An innerspring mattress fights against your body, while memory foam succumbs.
The fact the memory foam is temperature sensitive does have its downsides. For one, it doesn't adjust to you immediately after lying down on it. This is especially true when the temperatures are cooler. When you roll over, it also won't recover as fast, which means that you'll have a dip in the mattress where you just were. That makes it that much more difficult to turn over in the first place.
Cold temperatures also mean that the mattress can get very firm, which makes it uncomfortable for some. When hot, the mattress can feel very hot, even if it has dual airflow. This terms refers to the cells in the mattress encouraging air flow so it doesn't get too hot. Even with this feature, memory can still feel quite warm. This has always been one of the biggest complaints from customers. Though, it's not as big of a problem as it was even a few years ago.
Memory foam is the only material that compresses and distributes the pressure to other cells throughout. If this characteristic is very important to you, then consider buying a memory foam mattress or topper.
