Memphis is a major port city on the Mississippi River to the United States
. It is the largest industrial center of the State of Tennessee and is the county seat of Shelby. Memphis is considered "the cradle of the blues" and the famous Beale Street brings together many clubs including BB King. The city is also known to rock fans. Elvis Presley, who grew up in Memphis, has bought a sumptuous residence, Graceland, where he died August 16, 1977.
The city population was 669 651 inhabitants in 2008 (1285732 in the urban area). It is the largest city in Tennessee, but the second largest city of the state (behind Nashville, the capital). Memphis is the second most populous city in south-eastern United States (just behind Jacksonville Florida), yet its urban area is much less populated than Atlanta and Miami.
The Memphis area was originally inhabited by the Chickasaw Indians. It was then explored by Europeans, first by the Spanish conquistador Hernando de Soto in 1540.In 1680, a French expedition led by Ren Robert Cavelier de La Salle built Fort Prud'homme, the site of the current Memphis.
In 1739, to strengthen the defenses of Eastern French Louisiana, the governor of French Louisiana, Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne, Sieur de Bienville, is built a new fort, Fort Assumption, located at the confluence of the river Margot and the Mississippi River.
In 1763, after the Treaty of Paris, the English settled there, thus indicating their facility in eastern Tennessee. The area remained largely unorganized for a large part of the eighteenth century. The borders of Tennessee was much more extensive than at present. They included the North Carolina and South Carolina. These outposts in the land were the most in the west of the State.
Memphis was officially founded on May 22, 1819 by John Overton, James Winchester and Andrew Jackson and was regarded as a city in 1826. The city was named in honor of the ancient capital of Egypt on the Nile.
At the time of the Civil War, Memphis was a very important city because of the Mississippi (on business) and its railway lines (particularly those between Memphis and Charleston page is about the disambiguation inaugurated in 1857) . Tennessee seceded with the Union in June 1861 and the city briefly became a Confederate stronghold. The Union forces took Memphis to the Confederates at the Battle of Memphis June 6, 1862 and the city remained under their control throughout the war. Memphis was a supply base and continued to prosper.
The yellow fever epidemic in 1870 devastated the city. At that time it had not yet realized that the vector of this disease was the mosquito and thus the efforts against it were unnecessary. There were so many deaths and people fleeing the epidemic as Memphis lost its city status until 1893. Subsequently, the hygiene measures have helped

Memphis continued to grow and developed the largest market for U.S. cotton (40% of the cotton trade of the country) and the largest market for wood construction. Memphis is also known as the place where Martin Luther King was assassinated April 4, 1968 at the Lorraine Motel. The city is well known for his contribution to the culture of the South Americans, particularly in terms of cooking and music. Many great musicians have grown up in Memphis Blues from the 1900s, like Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson, BB King and Howlin 'Wolf. The first African-American radio in the city was founded in 1947 by Bert Ferguson and John Pepper and had DJ BBKing.
Memphis covers an area of 763 sq km 40 sq km of water and is located on the eastern bank of the Mississippi. The city lies on a hill overlooking the river at West Tennessee. Like his namesake ancient Egypt, the city lies above the apex of the delta.
Memphis is the hyphen between two radically different Americas: the poor farms south of Dixie, the swampy bayous of Louisiana and the largest port city in the European flair that is New Orleans on the north and west, the rich farmlands of the Midwest and plains of northern industrial cities like Chicago and Detroit.
