Memphis is a major port city on the Mississippi River to the United States

. It is the largest industrial center of the State of Tennessee and is the county seat of Shelby. Memphis is considered "the cradle of the blues" and the famous Beale Street brings together many clubs including BB King. The city is also known to rock fans. Elvis Presley, who grew up in Memphis, has bought a sumptuous residence, Graceland, where he died August 16, 1977.

The city population was 669 651 inhabitants in 2008 (1285732 in the urban area). It is the largest city in Tennessee, but the second largest city of the state (behind Nashville, the capital). Memphis is the second most populous city in south-eastern United States (just behind Jacksonville Florida), yet its urban area is much less populated than Atlanta and Miami.

The Memphis area was originally inhabited by the Chickasaw Indians. It was then explored by Europeans, first by the Spanish conquistador Hernando de Soto in 1540.In 1680, a French expedition led by Ren Robert Cavelier de La Salle built Fort Prud'homme, the site of the current Memphis.

In 1739, to strengthen the defenses of Eastern French Louisiana, the governor of French Louisiana, Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne, Sieur de Bienville, is built a new fort, Fort Assumption, located at the confluence of the river Margot and the Mississippi River.


In 1763, after the Treaty of Paris, the English settled there, thus indicating their facility in eastern Tennessee. The area remained largely unorganized for a large part of the eighteenth century. The borders of Tennessee was much more extensive than at present. They included the North Carolina and South Carolina. These outposts in the land were the most in the west of the State.

Memphis was officially founded on May 22, 1819 by John Overton, James Winchester and Andrew Jackson and was regarded as a city in 1826. The city was named in honor of the ancient capital of Egypt on the Nile.

At the time of the Civil War, Memphis was a very important city because of the Mississippi (on business) and its railway lines (particularly those between Memphis and Charleston page is about the disambiguation inaugurated in 1857) . Tennessee seceded with the Union in June 1861 and the city briefly became a Confederate stronghold.
