The hipster look is dead

The hipster look is dead. Long live Wayfarers and skinny-jeans. However, as the counterculture look falls out-of-favour, we are left with something of a gap in the mens' fashion market. With colder weather inbound as we move into autumn, style and function are set to meet half-way, and provide us with some rather intriguing mashups.

Casualwear is undergoing the most radical change. Cardigans are being swapped-out for more practical, darker-coloured jumpers or neutral-toned jackets and hoodies over plain or checkered shirts. Stripes and plain are both proving very popular. Longer shorts are still a relatively common sight, though these are gradually being replaced by darker, plainer jeans. Scarves, however, appear to be here to stay, often paired with a turtleneck or light-toned jumper. If a hat is called-for, then a slightly loose, light-coloured beanie-style piece will fit nicely. Knitwear, when combined with other, more rugged elements of the causal look, can help to round-off the look. In terms of footwear, we are presented with a choice between plain, unadorned boots, branded trainers or pair of brogues in brown or black leather. Brogues may seem an odd choice, but a well-maintained and polished pair thereof can lend a smart-casual sheen, or even be additionally used as part of a formal outfit, should the need arise. Alternately, loafers can be used, though practicality is always an issue to address when choosing shoes.

Formalwear is often more difficult to shop for than casual wear. Indeed, one's requirement in the formal field generally falls between establishing individualism, and coming across as wild to the point of ridicule . The trick is attention-to-detail. Things like dark leather gloves and smart, non-knitted scarves can sharpen-up an otherwise uninspired suit-style. In terms of outer-layers; darker, knee-length trenchcoats and shorter, form-fitting overcoats are among the most popular (but diverse) choices available. A desirable feature with such coats is a discreet inside-pocket, in which one can carry a wallet and/or keys without ruining the profile of one's suit trousers. Again, footwear can include loafers or brogues, with patterning acceptable if tasteful. As with casual wear, however, black or brown shoes are recommended.

Miscellaneous fashion accessories for men will, again, vary dependent upon the occasion. However, the messenger-style bag appears to be losing popularity in favour of a small backpack or, in a slightly more formal style, briefcase. Leather also appears to be making a resurgence, and a plain leather jacket might be the investment you need to truly accent your casual or smart-casual style. Speaking of smart-casual, 2012 has also seen the re-emergence of the bow tie as an adornment, and one could be worn with a shirt, in-place of a scarf. In-keeping with the final throes of the counterculture movement, one might wish to complete one's look with something retro. The pocketwatch, for example, has re-appeared in limited circles, and nothing has the potential to create a unique outfit like a cane or Victorian stovepipe hat.
