However, in actuality, these ratings apply to the pounds per square foot of pressure that the panels can withstand; and the pressure is a combination of positive and negative pressure. This means that when these panels are testes pressure is being put both on the inside and outside of the panel. For instance, a class 90 panel is required to hold up to 48.5lb/sq.ft of negative pressure while 41.5lb/sq.ft of positive pressure is being simultaneously applied. Together these two pressures amount to a total of 90lb/sq.ft.

To create a stronger panels the panel is made of higher gauge, or thicker, steel. Typically panels are manufactured of galvalume anywhere from 22ga to 29ga, although higher gauges are available. It's recommended to coat metal panels with zinc-aluminum to prevent corrosion that would diminish the strength of the panels. Fortunately, corrosion preventing materials such as zinc-aluminum are incorporated into some of the paints for metal panels. This way a building can be stylized and preserved with one coat of paint.

Other than paint color, a metal structure can be stylized with the selection of unique panel profiles. With different rib designs and hidden screws different panels can be integrated together to make a building stand out. Deeper ribbed panels are typically more industrial looking, while lower ribbed panels provide a lower profile while providing the same high strength.
