Mexican paint contains toxin that harms child development

A 10-nation study indicated paint used in Mexican homes typically has nearly 52,000 parts per million (ppm) of lead, a chemical which endangers children's development, said a research group at a Tuesday press conference.

"European countries began banning lead in the 1920s, while Mexico continues to produce lead paint even when there are alternatives," said Fernando Bejarano, director of the Centre for Analysis and Action on Toxics and their Alternatives (CAATA).

"Lead poisoning should be taken seriously because it threatens child development and health," said Jorge Arturo de Leon, a medical doctor and professor at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, who led the Mexican part of the study.

The other nine nations studied are Sri Lanka, Thailand, the Philippines, Tanzania, South Africa, Nigeria, Senegal, Brazil and Belarus.

Only half of the samples taken across the 10 nations had lead levels above 90 ppm. However, where lead concentrations were beyond this level, they usually surpassed it by at least 10 times. In the United States, 90 ppm is the maximum allowed.

CAATA said products of seven Mexican firms contain excessive lead levels:Comex, Pintusayer ICI, Optimus, Sherwin Williams, Berel, Soriana and Contimex.

The study also found that five of these firms -- Comex, Pintusayer ICI, Optimus, Sherwin Williams and Berel -- sell some paints that have low lead levels.
