Food-borne idleness

Food borne illness also referred to as food borne diseases refers to a number of diseases that result from consumption of a particular food. Food borne illness can result from food infection or from food intoxication. Food infection result from presence of bacteria and microbes in food which later infects the body after food is consumed. Food intoxication results from ingestion of toxins which are found in the food.

Food borne diseases are caused by different pathogens including salmonella, parasites, and many others. The common symptoms of food-borne illnesses include abdominal crump, nausea, fever, dehydration, diarrhea, vomiting, and many other signs. If not treated k, these symptoms may lead to development of other complications which can lead to loss of life (Winton and Kate, 1999).

Regulation of food safety and sanitation falls under the public health sectors which is mainly under FDA. However, these bodies are just mandated to provide guidelines which should be followed by each and every food service establishment. This means that food establishments have the overall duty of ensuring that they follow the stipulated food and safety regulations.

Food-borne illnesses are serious and can lead to death. Therefore the first step that Mr. Smith should take is to seek immediate medical attention to prevent further complications. As a good, citizens, Mr. Smith has the obligation to ensure that food service establishment conform to the required standards. Therefore the next step should be to follow up the mater with the concerned authority like the FDA or the local public health office to ensure that the food service establishments conform to standards (Baldwin, 1997).

Food digestion system

Food digestion is a complex process that begins with the ingestion of food in the mouth. After the food of ingest in the mouth it is masticated to increase the surface areas for enzyme action and then swallowed through the esophagus to the stomach. In the mouth there is partial digestion of carbohydrates through enzymes.

The stomach is a strong muscular pouch where the food is held for few hours undergoing mixing through stomach churning effects which turns the food to semi-fluid mixture. Hydrolic acid digests protein (Winton and Kate, 1999).

After five hours, the food is passed to the small intestine which is seventeen feet long. The food passes through duodenum, jejunum and ileum where intestinal hormones from gallbladder and pancreas release pancreatic juice that complete food digestion process. Food absorption also takes place in the small intestine. The unabsorbed foods is passed through the large intestine which constitute of caecum, colon, and rectum where the rest of the food and water is absorbed (Baldwin, 1997).

The remaining matter is compressed to feaces or stool which is passed out the body through anus. This is usually composed of the undigested foods like fibers and unabsorbed nutrients. The execration of the unabsorbed matters completes the food digestion and absorption process.

Accessory organs of digestion include organs which assist in digestion process through release of hormones. They include salivary glands which release salivary amylase, pancreas which release pancreatic juice, gall bladder which release bile which emulsify fat, and liver which is used in metabolism and excretion of nutrients from the body.

Weight loss advice

The difference between the advice that was given by a nutritionist and the advice the dietician and I are giving is that the nutritionist plan advocates for rapid weight loss while our plane is advocating for planned weight loss. This means the nutritional plan may not be realistic since it will increase the risk to Mr. Smith health. Our plan is advocating for gradual reduction in weight.

Macronutrients play a major role in fueling and building the body. There are three basic macronutrients including carbohydrates, protein and fats. Carbohydrate is the main nutrient providing energy to the body. It also provides for protein sparing function through provision of efficient energy. Protein is the main body building nutrient. It plays a wide range of functions including building and repairing of body tissues, proving energy in starvation, and many other functions (Baldwin, 1997).

The fast weight loss diet that Mr. Smith is recommending is dangers for his body since it lead to inefficient supply of enough energy in the body. This diet may advantageous in that it will lead to rapid weight loss compared to the other method. However, it will also lead to adverse health effects like lack of enough energy for basic metabolic process which leads to breakdown of proteins. This increases the vulnerability of the body to diseases (Winton and Kate, 1999).

There are a lot of risks that are associated with low carbohydrate high fat and protein diet. This diet will lead to inadequate supply of energy to carry out basic body metabolic process leading to increased use of protein for energy. Increased breakdown of proteins will result to acidosis. High fat diet is also likely to increase the risk for atherosclerosis and other related complications.
