Mid-range Androids: Too Few To Choose From

I still remember the day when I had just got hold of the Samsung Galaxy S for review

. I took it home, and my father, who generally isn't too interested with all the gadgetry, happened to check it out. He was entirely blown away with its Super AMOLED display, the super-thin frame and the Android experience. But when he learnt of its Rs. 28,000 price, I could tell his discontented face indicated an "Are you freakin' kidding me?" retort.

Ever since the sale of the iPhone in India with a Rs. 30,000+ price tag, it has given hope to other manufacturers that they can do the same. Armed with Google's constantly improving Android OS that gives the iOS a fair fight, numerous phones have cropped up that sport features that one up the iPhone on the software as well as hardware front. Features like screens that are bigger than 3.5 inches, camera sensors larger than 5 megapixels, presence of HDMI ports etc. Then, there's stuff on Android like the Notification bar, widgets, ability to act like a Wi-fi Router, not to forget the tightly integrated Google services that the iOS lacks. So, at the end of the day we have a fair fight in the high-end Rs. 30,000 price segment.

But not everybody can or will spend 30 grand on a cellphone. Most people will only spend up to half that amount. A poll on Techtree suggested exactly that, with over 50 percent people willing to cough up only between Rs. 5,000 to Rs. 15,000 on a handset. This segment is more than satisfied with a ton of feature-phones as well as entry-level and lower mid-range smartphones. The Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 15,000 bracket is especially full of Android phones that try to mirror most of the competitors features and have one or two extras thrown in to make the model tempting (the LG Optimus P500 being the most workable option of the lot).

Now the price bracket above this and below the high-end Rs. 30k megaphones sorely lacks any punch at the moment. We're talking of the range between Rs. 15,000 to Rs. 20,000. Most of what resides here are a bunch of old handsets that nobody wants; like the Sony Ericsson Vivaz/Vivaz Pro/Aino, the HTC Touch2/HD Mini, the Motorola Backflip or the LG Chocolate BL40.

Off the recent releases, the Samsung Wave II S8530 and the Nokia C7 are probably the only two phones with good hardware under their bodies. But, Nokia's Symbian^3 isn't as good as Android in terms of UI and App store support. The Wave II, although with an impressive spec-sheet and a fairly usable Bada OS, disappoints due to the unavailability of the most basic apps on its store.

The genius in you would probably rise right about now and say, "Hey, why doesn't Samsung just put Android in that Wave handset?" Hardware-wise, the Rs. 18,000 Wave II isn't too different from the Rs. 28,000 Galaxy S - big capacitive screens of the same 800 x 480 pixel resolution, 1GHz processor, 512MB RAM, 3G/GPS/Wi-fi 802.11n, 5 megapixel autofocus cameras, 720p HD video playback and recording etc. And with Android being free to use, it is technically possible for Samsung to sell an Android-infested Wave II for the same price.

We already said the same thing long back. But then Samsung will mostly never do that, primarily for two reasons: 1) It will kill the Galaxy S, as there would be little reason to pay Rs. 10,000 more to get it, 2) It would kill Samsung's purpose to promote its own Bada OS packaged in a phone with such titillating hardware.Toshiba pa3533u-1brs Battery | Toshiba pa3399u-2brs Battery| HP pavilion dv6000 Battery
