How Mikimoto pearls are formed: A pearl is the final result of certain shell fish such as oysters and mollusks. The shellfish membrane react when an outside entity enters into the shell, such as a corn of sand. The osyter encapsules the sand to protect it itself and as time goes by the layers of crystalline substance called nacre becomes a pearl. This process can be done artificially and it was Mikimoto who first began doing so.

It's common belief that Mikimoto invented this process of cultivation, but that is not entirely true. The concept of cultivation was known at the time, but he was a driving force in developing modern techniques and more importantly played a big factor in making this known around the world. As the son of a restaurant owner, no one would have guessed that his name would live on as the most famous brand of pearls.

Like almost all famous inventors trough history, success did not come easy. Failure followed failure as he struggled to get the right combination of water, shellfish and tidal water just right, but eventually the hard work did pay off.

That breaking point came on July 11, 1883, when his wife, Ume, discovered that there was a beautiful pearl hidden in one of his grown oysters. That set the ball rolling and when he died in 1954, Mikimoto had promoted his pearls all over the world.
