Mindfulness – Stop Living in Mental Stupor
Habit of Over Thinking
Habit of Over Thinking
Some researchers claim that on an average sixty thousand thoughts cross your mind daily. If every thought is energy, consider the amount wasted by useless thinking. Being lost in thoughts is a common experience. As you go about your daily activities, your mind roams around wherever it wants.
You are cooking and put some stuff to boil for 5 minutes, the mind goes its way and comes back after half an hour when you feel burning smell. You sit down to complete an article but the mind has its own plans. It is rare to have your mind cooperate fully you. As a result, it is rare to find your mind accompany you where you are. We may call it living robotically. You hardly ever experience the surroundings around you.
Isn't it silly that you are exercising, but your mind gets lost thinking about some office project? You go to a party and after few minutes you find yourself worrying about the deadline next week and the amount of work that needs to be done before that. Suddenly you find thoughts of remorse crossing your mind you shouldn't have come to the party wasting time.
If you look carefully you will find that most of the time your mind is busy over things that happened a while ago or planning for the future. It finds difficult to accompany you. This disconnection harms you in two ways: First, you're spoiling the present moment, and second, you're wasting a lot of energy thinking or worrying about petty issues and weakening you as a result.
Mindfulness and Mental Chatter
It is a fact that the very act of being attentive discourages the process of thinking. Those with some experience of mindfulness meditation can testify that whenever you pay attention to any thing, say breathing or mantra chanting, the habitual thinking process (mental wondering) is discouraged. It is the habit of mind to wonder about in a haphazard way. Mindful awareness reduces wondering and promotes focus.
Mindfulness demands that you don't fight your mind but acknowledge its right to behave like a spoiled child (and protect yourself from troubles!). The practice of mindfulness involves a dispassionate observation of whatever is happening in your mind thinking, feeling, criticizing, liking, disliking, imagining, or whatever. You train to be a detached witness who does not get involved with any experience or thinking.
This reduces your identification with mental processes and you begin to develop a safe distance from these activities. This leads to an interesting outcome: You become less self-absorbed and become more self-aware.
How Mindfulness helps
Did you notice how your relationship with your mind (and its idiosyncrasies) has undergone a subtle but significant change? This is the basic idea of mindfulness.
The so called normal living involves reacting to every thing almost impulsively. But mindfulness training changes all that. Now you don't identify with mental activities. This allows you space and freedom to respond the way you decide. You may even choose not to react at all that's what most of the mindfulness practice is all about.
Now as opposed to reacting robotically you respond deliberately. This totally changes the way you connect to people and your surroundings.
