Minerals - The Building Blocks of Life-cycle
Minerals are the chemical elements that life needs in order exist beyond the four
elements that exist in all life forms (hydrogen, nitrogen, carbon and oxygen). The term minerals isn't used as much these days because it is used to refer to those elements in a diet which are less common than other nutrients. Some dieticians recommend that people pay attention to how many minerals they get in their diet and that they make sure they are getting enough, whether through natural foods or supplements. This article will explain the common minerals the human body needs and how you can make sure you are getting enough of them.
There are broadly speaking two groups of minerals that people need for their bodies to be healthy. Macro-minerals and trace-minerals. Macro-minerals are those that have a recommended dietary allowance of 200 mg per day. What follows is a description of the macro-minerals, why your body needs them and what food you can find it in.
Calcium is a mineral that is an electrolyte. Electrolytes are substances that contain free ions that make that substance electrically conductive. But the mineral calcium is also necessary for the structure of the human body in particular the muscles, digestive system and of course the bones. In addition it also neutralizes acidity in the body, helps to clear toxins and provides the ions necessary for signals in the nervous system. To get calcium you should eat and drink dairy products, salmon, spinach, rhubarb, almonds, kale and broccoli.
Magnesium is a mineral that is necessary to create Adenosine Triphosphate in the body which helps to build bones and also helps to create alkalinity in the body. You can get this mineral from fresh green leafy vegetables like spinach as well as nuts and bread, fish and meat.
Sulfur is a mineral that your body needs to create three essential amino-acids and therefore many proteins necessary for your skin, nails and hair amongst other things. Sulfur is present is present in almost all foods.
The minerals sodium and potassium are common electrolytes and are present in many different foods and people should be careful they don't take in too much in the form of salt. If you get too much it may deplete your calcium and magnesium stores.
Phospherous is a mineral that is necessary for your bones and teeth and is important for energy processing. You can get phospherous by eating red meat, dairy foods, bread, rice, fish, oats and poultry.
Besides the above macro-minerals your body also needs trace-minerals such as zinc to create enzymes, selenium an anti-oxidant, manganese for processing oxygen, iron for enzymes and hemoglobin in your blood, iodine for the glands in your body, chromium to metabolize sugar, copper for enzymes and cobalt to create Vitamin B12 in your body. You can get these trace-minerals easily by eating a varied diet that consists of lots of fresh natural whole foods including plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. Taking supplements if you are not getting enough of one or more macro or trace-mineral.
