Minimally Invasive Approaches for Spinal Trauma

Recently, I've been seeing increased interest in minimally invasive options for spinal surgery. I'd like to take a moment to discuss these minimally invasive procedures in terms of spinal trauma when they're appropriate, and when they're not.

"Minimally Invasive" Defined

In any area of surgery, a minimally invasive procedure is generally defined as one that avoids "open surgery." In the context of spinal surgery, "open surgery" indicates a procedure that involves a large incision to allow the surgeon direct access to the spine.

Spinal Trauma

The goal of any surgeon is to limit the invasiveness of each procedure without compromising results or safety. Minimally invasive options have been developed to help us achieve that goal. I commonly perform 2 minimally invasive procedures at my practice specifically for patients with spinal trauma:

Vertebroplasty. During vertebroplasty, I use a small needle to inject special bone cement into the fractured vertebrae. This stabilizes the spine and reduces pain.

Kyphoplasty. Kyphoplasty also uses bone cement to stabilize broken vertebrae. However, during this procedure we must first insert and inflate a small balloon. The balloon creates space at the fractured vertebra to restore height.

These procedures can reduce recovery time, they require a shorter hospital stay, and they allow for a more comfortable recovery. However, there are some instances when a minimally-invasive approach to spinal trauma is not appropriate. For example, for a patient with a spinal cord injury on Long Island or in New York City, vertebroplasty or kyphoplasty alone won't do the trick. In the case of spinal cord injury, the spine must first be decompressed before it can be stabilized.
