Minnesota Vikings Tickets - Life Without Favre Would Be Bleak But Not Over

Brett Favre might finally throw in the towel

Brett Favre might finally throw in the towel. Such is the word around Minnesota during the first week of August, as the future Hall of Fame quarterback has announced a possible retirement (again) from the National Football League. Favre has been battling an ankle injury for several months and rehabilitation doesn't look to be going as well as planned, thus leading the Vikings' starting quarterback to announce that after 19 years in the league he might finally call it quits if his ankle doesn't heal in time for the regular season.

Favre's news this week marks the third time in three years that he's suggested "retirement" from the NFL (first from the Green Bay Packers in 2008 and then again with the New York Jets in 2009,) but perhaps this year's Favre Retirement 3.0 news is the most unbelievable yet. Favre is coming off arguably the best year of his entire career, finishing the 2009-10 football season with 4,202 total yards, 33 touchdowns and seven interceptions with a QB rating of 107.2.

This year will mark Favre's landmark 20th season in the NFL, but now it looks like he may not be back for one last hurrah, after all. If the Vikings had a strong notion that Favre would end up retiring before the 2010-11 season, however, they sure haven't shown it this offseason. The Vikes had a shot at picking up QB Donovan McNabb from the Eagles in a trade this offseason and passed, also declining to select quarterbacks such as Jimmy Clausen and Colt McCoy in the 2010 NFL Draft.

These offseason moves led football fans and analysts to believe that 40-year-old Favre would be back to lead the Vikings to another playoff berth this season and possibly even another run at the Super Bowl, but now that Favre has announced his possible retirement, the Vikings have to reevaluate their quarterback situation if he decides not to come back.

Should Brett Favre really be finished in Minnesota, the Vikings' training camp will likely come down to a quarterback battle between 10-year veteran Sage Rosenfels and five-year vet Tarvaris Jackson. Rosenfels, who was picked up by the Vikes last season in a trade with the Houston Texans, has a 32-game passing total of 4,156 yards and 30 touchdowns with 29 interceptions and a QB rating of 81.2.

Jackson, on the other hand, was drafted by the Vikings in the second round of the 2006 draft and has served a more prominent role with the team so far than Rosenfels, though his numbers don't stack up quite as well. In 33 career games, Jackson has thrown for 3,643 yards and 21 touchdowns with 18 interceptions and a QB rating of 77.9. He's been taking more snaps at training camp than Rosefels, however, giving him the upper hand should Brett Favre really retire.

While neither Jackson nor Rosenfels has had the same kind of clout as Brett Favre, the Vikings still have a solid offensive core to build around should Favre's retirement stick. Minnesota will likely revert to a running game in the case of Favre's actual retirement, and it's a good thing they've got arguably the best running back in the league in Adrian Peterson to fall back on.

The Vikings also have Percy Harvin, the 2009 Rookie of the Year, at wide receiver, and fellow receivers Bernard Berrian and Sidney Rice have the bases covered for the Vikes' passing game. Still, Brett Favre has been a monumental piece to Minnesota's success over the last year, and he's been a big seller of Minnesota Vikings tickets ever since his decision to join the team in 2009.

Will Brett Favre jet to Minnesota in time for the start of the 2010-11 NFL season or is the future Hall of Famer done for good this time? A final decision is to come over the next several weeks, but the Minnesota Vikings will still be just fine no matter the verdict.
