Minoxidil - Does It Work In Treating Hairloss

?

If you're losing your hair then you've probably already done some research on the subject. You want to know if there are any cures or are you doomed to being a bald guy right? The simple truth is that right now there is no cure - as in there's no pill that you take or lotion that you spray on your head that makes all your hair grow back.

But there are treatments out there that do actually work in helping to slow down and reverse baldness - although this can take time. The hairloss treatment we're going to talk about here is minoxidil and whether or not it actually works.

So where did minoxidil come from? Well over 20 years ago a company called Upjohn were testing a type of heart medication called Loniten. During the clinical trials for this some patients noticed that they were growing hair back in areas that used to be bald. Now because this medication was designed to for patients with hypertension you couldn't just give it to anyone on the street. So Upjohn mixed the loniten into a solution called minoxidil which was then rebranded as Rogaine for sale to the general public as a 2% solution that was prescription only.

That was in the late 80s and early 90's. Minoxidil is now available in a 15% strength solution and has been combined with several other hairloss treatment agents to give you maximum hair regrowth potential.

Now of course the big question you want answered - does minoxidil actually work?

The short answer is yes minoxidil does work but it's not a cure. Anyone who sells it as a cure is lying to your face. But it can and does work to fight hairloss.

Firstly the stronger a solution you can use the better the results you're going to get. Secondly using plain old minoxidil isn't enough anymore - you'll need to have it combined with a DHT inhibitor like Azelaic Acid and/or Finasteride. Using a combination treatment will give you much better results than just minoxidil on its own.

What really decides how effective minoxidil is going to be for you is to start using it sooner rather than later. For example if you've been bald for 20 or 30 years then you'll probably get limited results from this treatment. If you've only just started losing your hair then you can expect quicker and more impressive results from using minoxidil.

The main issue with this treatment is that it's topical which means you apply it to your scalp once or twice a day. Not all of the treatment gets absorbed into your scalp so it's not as effective as taking a pill. The other factor is that minoxidil doesn't fight DHT (the hormone which causes male pattern baldness) as well as Propecia for example. Minoxidil is effective as a hair growth stimulant but it does need to be used with a DHT blocker for the best possible results.
