Missing Out On Getting A Sales Job
If you have been shortlisted for a job but missed out after the final round of interviews
, it is important not to lose heart. The good news is that to have made it all the way to the final shortlist, you have already been assessed as capable of doing the job. It is just that you simply missed out in competition.
It is not uncommon for the candidate who beat you to the job to leave shortly after commencing it - they might decide that they do not fit in to the company's culture, or maybe they are offered another job elsewhere. Or, the company decides to advertise for another sales person to join their team. Rather than start the whole sales recruitment process up again from scratch, it is not unusual for the company to go back to the original shortlist of candidates and offer one of them the job.
That being said, you cannot hang around forever in the hope of getting a call from the company that rejected you. Always have several jobs 'on the go' at once as a fall back option. Here are some tips on how to prepare yourself for your next round of sales recruitment interviews:
* Learn from your experiences - Ask for feedback from your recruiters and learn about what you did well and what you did not do well in your interview. Use this information to critically analyze your interview performance and improve your interview technique.
* Don't take it personally - Sales recruitment interviews are not the most effective way of recruiting sales people and a lot of factors are involved that are out of your control.
Interviews rely heavily on the skill and judgment of the interviewer, who do not necessarily make the best hiring decisions. So being rejected in not a reflection of you personally or how well you could have done the job.
* Accept that this is just part of the process Reality dictates that job rejections are part of life and that even the best of us have experienced job rejections. Accepting that rejections are part of the sales recruitment process will help you to cope emotionally.
* Focus on what you really want - You have conducted heaps of research on sales jobs, or maybe you have worked in sales for a long time. Either way, you are convinced that this is the career for you. The best way to pick up the pieces is to re-focus your efforts on the goal of obtaining a sales job. Keep your rejection in perspective and understand that it is not a reflection of your lack of capability.
The sales recruitment business is competitive, particularly if you are new to sales, and any given rejection does not mean that your skills and qualifications are not necessarily suited to the profession.
A useful way of looking at rejections, particularly if you have progressed a fair way into the sales recruitment process and have been interviewed, is that it is all great experience. By applying for lots of jobs you are giving yourself many of opportunities to practice and refine your technique and what you have learned.
Do not give up just because you have been turned down for a job. Learn from your experiences, remain focused, and keep on applying for jobs. Communicate to your prospective employer how hard you have worked to get a sales job, and they will be impressed by your motivation and tenacity.
