One of those is the George J. Mitchell Scholarship, usually called the Mitchell Scholarship. This scholarship is provided by the US-Ireland Alliance in order to promote a better relationship between American citizens and the Island of Ireland as well as to serve the society by reaching a greater academic success.

Named after former senator George J. Mitchell for his important role in bringing peace to Northern Ireland, this scholarship offers full funding including tuition, a living expenses stipend, housing, and even the international travel bursary. However, it is only given for one year study since it is possible to finish an Irish graduate program in one year. Despite the fact that this fellowship was given for the first time in 2001, it has become a very selective scholarship now. It is given annually to only twelve selected Americans who meet the requirements set by the US-Ireland Alliance, which are: excellent in academic area, good leadership, and great commitment to serve he society.

The general requirements to get this grant are: must be US resident, must be between 18 to 30 years old, and must have a bachelor degree from accredited university. Next, applicants must research their desirable graduate programs that available in Ireland, and then propose at least three specific programs from three different campuses. Less proposed programs mean less probability to be selected.

Applicants can only propose online, meaning that application through hardcopy documents is prohibited and the documents will be destroyed. They basically have to fill all sections in the application form including Personal Information; Education and Employment; Awards and Activities; Registration of Recommenders/Institutional Endorser; and Personal Statement. They then have to upload some of their supporting documents such as passport, photo, transcript, etc. before the deadline. Semi finalists who consist of approximately twenty applicants will be interviewed by the Selection Committee, and only the best twelve will get the grant.
