When the iPhone first launched years ago, a new market opened up: mobile application development

. Although Blackberry was offering a decent amount of applications for their own brand, it paled in comparison to Apple's own market. But it didn't take long before a competitor, Android, rose to the challenge to see if they could beat Apple at their own game. And it didn't stop there. Not only do we have a rise in smartphone usage, tablet computers have forged yet another path for the app market.

Recent studies have shown that people are spending more time on mobile apps than browsing the web -but that doesn't mean users aren't surfing the web on their phones, tablets, and desktop computers. Thanks to Apple, again, tablet computers have become increasingly popular. While the concept of a tablet certainly isn't new, Apple knew just the right way to market the device. In the beginning, it wasn't clear if people had a use for a tablet since just about everything can be done from one's phone. But with the incentive of using it as a beefed up, better e-reader and a more comfortable way to watch movies and television, it wasn't hard to eventually convince consumers. Immediately after its release we began seeing other computer companies jumping on board, not to be left in the dust.

So if we look at the portable electronics market today, we have smartphones, mp3 players (predominately the iPod Touch, e-readers, and tablet computers, all of which offer thousands of apps for download. There has been billions of apps downloaded already, across all markets, so there is plenty of opportunity for profitable mobile application development. But companies looking to create an app might feel stumped about where to place their app. The smartest solution is to create a cross-platform application. Yes, it's more money but you will be reaching a much larger audience. Many people who own a smartphone probably own a tablet computer and maybe even an e-reader too. Consumers today love owning all the latest and greatest devices and they want those devices to have all the apps necessary to make the user experience even better.

If someone doesn't own another device today, he probably will in the near future. There will always be particular apps that work better on one device than another, but people enjoy having multiple options. Don't leave out one market when there is the possibility to tap into several. You can increase your revenue without limiting your reach.
