Mobile Number Portability in India

The world's second largest mobile subscriber base of 752.19million customers with approximately 70% active numbers, India is on the global map for mobile handset manufacturers as well as mobile service providers. The expected launch of low-cost tablets by companies like Micromax, Lemon, and other home grown companies, and with the launch of 3G services; The market will be growing at a staggering rate than the previous years in the coming quarters ahead.

Mobile Number portability is one of the most awaited services that customers in India have been waiting for years wherein they could change the service provider but keep their numbers with them for lifetime. The growth in the number of customers recently after the entry of new service providers was mainly due to the non-availability of such a service in place which led to customers purchasing multiple sim cards and purchasing multi-sim mobiles and secondary mobiles which also gave boost to the home grown handsets makers like Micromax, lava, Ion, Onida because of the availability of patented dual and triple sim mobiles in their portfolio.

The main reason for Porting of mobile connections has been the poor customer service, and connectivity issues among others. Customers had no option to switch from operator-to-operator for better service, plans and network mainly because it would lead to informing all his contact list about the change in number which is a tedious job for a professional and had to deal with the same operator. Problems regarding connectivity is of the major concerns, wherein there were high number of call drops and call failures in major metro cities which were not prioritized by the operator and customers had to deal with these issues with no alternate solution than sticking to the operator.

Months before Mobile number portability came into place, mobile operators like Airtel, Loop, vodafone rejig their strategies to make network more efficient and advanced for high speed data and voice connections, They brought in a higher standard of customer care and customer service which were not a priority before the MNP proposal as the operators were assured of retaining top spending postpaid and prepaid connections. Airtel had to shut down its bulk messaging service to make their network efficient and companies like loop upgraded their network to make it more efficient.

With the portability in place the new entrants like Tata DOCOMO, Reliance GSM, Uninor, Videocon mobiles have got a level playing field wherein customers can join the new operators for mouth watering deals on data and voice services. Customers could retain the same number which was not the case before and customers had to move towards purchasing multi-sim to avail those benefits and purchase dual-triple sim handsets to retain old number. On the other side of the coin the operators who cannot provide their customer the appropriate services and cannot satisfy will port to other service providers in search of greener pastures and will retain the number too, which will pull down the current 70% active sim-cards to about 65% in the coming months.

To retain the customer a operator will not only be required to provide good customer service and value for money plans but also have to provide plans which will bound the customer to stay with the operator for a longer time period. The companies may tie-up with handset manufacturers like Nokia, and Samsung to bring network locked handsets at lower rates, provide yearly/half yearly data and voice plans, quarterly/half yearly, yearly VAS plans, and customized postpaid and prepaid plans depending on the usage which will bound the customer for a long period with an operators or else it would prove to be difficult to keep the customers intact for a long period.

The main headache for the customers in the end would be to know who all in the friends list belong to their own network and who all have changed their operators. Customers those with special tariff packages of low call cost within the same network will have a Herculean task to know the operator as the first 4-digits of the mobile connection will be same but operator will be different and the call cost would be different, the only solution would be provide some kind of signal or automated voice to know the operator before the call gets connected for transparency in the call charges.

At the end of the day, it is the customer who goes home with a big smile with the new plans from the operators, and highly efficient network infrastructure for seamless network connectivity and unmatched customer service quality.
