They differ from cordless telephones, which only offer telephone service within limited range through a single base station attached to a fixed land line, for example within a home or an office.

Mobiles have become a part of the daily urban life. It is a lot more than just a necessity. Previously set reminders of important events are periodically received in the course of the day. Plans are formulated and cancelled. At times even work either through a call or on the internet is completed. People can be contacted in seconds via calls or SMS almost 24/7, 365 days a year.

In addition to being a telephone, modern mobile phones also support many additional services, and accessories, such as SMS, email, Internet access, gaming, Bluetooth, infrared, camera, MMS messaging, MP3 player, radio and GPRS.

Over the course of about a decade, the mobile phone industry over the world has grown in leaps and bounds. At one time mobiles were a fashion statement available only to the upper echelon of society. But today it is available and affordable for almost every strata of society. They have practically become an inseparable part of our daily routine. We cannot imagine a day without the security of our little phone somewhere within accessible reach.

By the end of 2009, only 20 years later, the number of mobile cellular subscriptions worldwide reached approximately 4.6 billion, 370 times the 1990 number, penetrating the developing economies and reaching the bottom of the economic pyramid.

Most of the credit for these achievements in the field of mobiles goes to companies like Nokia, Motorola, Samsung, and Sony Ericsson and so on. The intense commercial competition between them pushes them to keep re-inventing the technology to come out with increasingly better phones at surprisingly affordable prices.
