About Android

This is the mobile platform that has come from nowhere and is taking the mobile world by storm. Acquired by Google in 2005, Google now develop sponsor the OS (it is open source so no one has to pay for it when they use it on their phones. The OS is available on phones made by all phone manufacturers (except those that use their own OS'; Apple, RIM) from Acer to HTC and Dell!

All Android phones come with 3G as they usually are quite data hungry. Most packages give the option of 750MB of data per month (up to 3GB per month on some mobile providers). The base Android OS is usually "skinned" (placing a program that replaces the default Android user interface [UI]) with the manufacturers' own interface to make it a bit prettier and give it more functionality (for example HTC's Sense UI or Samsung's Smart Life UI). So what you see when you turn on the phone will be a little bit different from model to model. There is a draw back to this though, because it means that if Google update the OS then you will have to wait for the manufacturers to release a new skin for the OS before you can get the benefits, this time period has ranged from 2 months to 2 years!
