Modern Feng Shui vs Traditional Feng Shui
With the growing popularity of modern Feng Shui, many are quick to say "In with the new, out with old!" with the latter being Traditional Feng Shui. What are the differences though? And which one works better? Today's article will compare the two and attempt to finally settle the debate. We will start with classical Feng Shui.
Classical Feng Shui is essentially, the ancient school and oldest form of Feng Shui. Going back nearly 6000 years, the Chinese originally used it to find the proper placement for their deceased loved ones burial. They believed that in order for their spirits to live on in peace and harmony, one must be buried correctly or suffer the consequences of bad luck.
Over the centuries, it became more and more complex as the first Feng Shui masters studied the cosmos and our Earth. The Ancient Chinese were very analytical and revered Nature. In fact, they were one of the first group of people who understood that there was a life force or what we now know today as "chi". With this principal they began recording their observations until there technique was effective in creating an environment which fostered health, wealth, prosperity etc.
The practice became so effective that Chinese emperors would covet and hoard the knowledge in an attempt to maintain their power over his kingdom. In fact, the emperor's own personal Feng Shui master was prevented from sharing his knowledge with peasants under penalty of death.
Overall, classical Feng Shui hasn't really changed much over the years; with enough trial and error, the masters perfected a system when used properly, can give anyone a life filled with happiness. We can see why Feng Shui has endured for so long and withstood the test of time.
Pros: Can be very effective when used properly.
Cons: Difficult to study and understand the classical methods due to its complexity. Lack of popularity has caused the traditional ways to be disregarded and as a result, lack of resources available for people to study.
With Modern Feng Shui, the status quo really got shifted upside down. Developed only a few decades ago, it's birth was essentially a result of wanting to appeal to the Western world. It was only in the late 20th century when non-Asian countries began taking an interest in Feng Shui. And so Modern Feng Shui was born and with it, a whole new system and way of thinking that would ultimately challenge the tried and tested values of classical Feng Shui.
Modern Feng Shui masters set out to make the ancient science "hip" and "sexy" ; it was the only way a Westerner could comprehend such a foreign concept. Classical Feng Shui became "diluted" as a result. The new wave of modern Feng Shui introduced us to different schools of thought, the two most notable ones being "Black Hat Sect" and "Bagua" Feng Shui. I won't go into great detail of either but both serve as a starting point to compare classical with the new.
The aforementioned methods streamlined 6000 years of knowledge and made it simple for Westerners to understand what Feng Shui is (or in some cases, what it isn't). It is quite clear why Modern Feng Shui has become so popular and mainstream.
Pros: Very accessible to the public with tons of resources/books where you can learn Feng Shui. For beginners, it is also very easy to understand and practice.
Cons: Due to the fact that modern methods of delineated from classical Feng Shui, it might not be as effective.
In conclusion, both methods are great but when it comes down to choosing which method to use, there really isn't a right or wrong answer. For beginners, using modern Feng Shui might be the wisest choice as it gets your foot into the door and the concepts are easier to grasp. When you become more knowledgeable, then progress to classical methods. My own personal belief is that classical Feng Shui has been used for thousands of years and therefore more effective due to the collective knowledge. But ultimately, you should learn both schools of thought and see what works for YOU. I've seen many people using both with great success so the choice is yours.
