Moments You Would Wish You Were Not a Nurse

There are moments when you just wish that you were not wearing that plain white uniform and that dainty cap of yours no matter how much you love being a nurse. These are the times when you can't bear being yourself. These are the instances where nurses would just pray that they can turn their backs on their patients' charts and run all the way home. These are the moments when:

- The patient is heaving his last few breaths and all his family members are gathered around him, watching him die. And yes, you are there, and there is nothing you can do to save him.

- An old patient feels very thirsty and desperately wants to drink lots of cold water, but he's on NPO (Nothing per Orem). And yes, all you can give the old man are little sips of water or wet his lips with a water-soaked cotton ball.

- A patient asks about his diagnosis and the doctor has ordered you not to tell him that he is dying until his family comes. Yes, you're caught in the middle of following doctors' orders and being truthful to your patient.

- You're eyeballs feel like they're dropping from their sockets because of a 16 hour shift but you can't go home yet because you're going to relieve a colleague who reported to be absent the next shift.

- A patient with third degree burns is howling because of too much pain but you can't give her a pain reliever for it will further depress her heart rate which is 50 beats per minute at the moment.

- You're patient looks like a pathetic Christmas tree because of all the tubing attached to his body, and there you are again at her bedside to attach yet another tubing.

- You are providing utmost care for your patient; however, it is called a "post mortem" care and your patient cannot feel your concern anymore.

These moments make our hearts go somber that we sometimes wish that we could just throw that license out of the window. No matter how desolate we are or how frustrated we feel, we must accept that these are the realities that a nurse faces every day. It is important however that a nurse knows how to handle these inklings and remember the beauty of his or her profession; that no matter how sad the above stories end, there are still things that they can do to help improve the lives of their other patients; that they still manage to put smiles to the lips of those who appreciate their care.
