Money To Attend College: Obama Grants For Moms

Education is always an important key to a good future

. The President has on many occasions emphasized the need for a strong education system. Grants and scholarships are just the beginning of efforts to try to make over higher education.

One familiar part of the economic meltdown is the rise in college tuition and other costs. Besides tuition and housing, fees for books, travel and eating are often not covered. Many young adults choose to forgo college because of the cost. Single moms are especially affected in a bad way. Helping single mothers get an education helps their families and future employers. The President believes in this and has begun a mission to create scholarships for moms. Federal Pell Grants have now been fondly called Obama grants. With these grants, college-bound students can receive over $5,000 to pay for school. Before Pell grants maxed out at about $4,000. The scholarship money covers practically all school-related expenses.

Another worthwhile program is the American Opportunity Tax Credit. With this tax credit, the first $4,000 of college expenses are free. Especially for less expensive schools, $4,000 could be a significant help for a student. A grant and a tax break could be just the thing to help students like working single moms. There are almost no restrictions on where and what a student studies. Now the expenses are just a little lighter, and eager mothers can enroll in school.

Increasing educational opportunity and performance is undoubtedly one of the President's goals. With the recent passage of the economic stimulus plan, a lot of college loans will be offered by the government. The administration is also focusing on improving the performance of schools at all levels. Since many overlook community colleges, there is emphasis on increasing their effectiveness and appeal. Community college is important to prepare students for a 4-year college but also to prepare them for a 2-year degree or technical skill.

In his Reclaiming the American Dream speech in 2007, Obama said, "We need to put a college education within reach of every American. That's the best investment we can make in our future." The President's actions are reflecting his words. Even though Obama's grants for moms get much attention they are certainly not the only important opportunity being offered. Traditional and non-traditional students alike have numerous opportunities to put their education first.
