Moobs Become A Thing Of The Past As The Number Of Male Breast Reductions Rise In The Uk
Men often suffer in silence when it comes to their opinions of their physical appearance
, but in 2009, more of them were doing something about these negative thoughts. In spite of the poor economic climate, the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (or BAAPS) found UK plastic surgery clinics performed 80% more male breast reductions in 2009 for a total of 581 procedures completed. This makes it the third most requested procedure for men in the UK.
Men develop breasts for numerous reasons including obesity, diet, genetics, aging, diseases or conditions, and from some medications. Regardless why they appear, however, men find them extremely difficult to eliminate. Even with the help of a UK cosmetic surgeon, patients only have two main options.
Cosmetic surgeons can suck the unpleasant fatty tissue out through a small incision using a process known as liposuction. This leaves very little scarring and a natural shape. If this isn't an option, plastic surgeons use an incision along the nipple or base of the breast to eliminate unwanted skin and fat cells. Both techniques can be performed as an outpatient, but have a recovery period of up to six weeks.
After the procedure, patients experience bruising, swelling and pain, which is managed with a regimen of pain medication. The patient will also need a special compression garment to aid healing. However, patients are generally pleased with the results.
UK Plastic Surgery Clinics Perform More Cosmetic Procedures for Men and Women
UK plastic surgeons performed more gynaecomastia in 2009, but it wasn't the only procedure they were performing more frequently. The top five procedures for men included liposuction in fifth, otoplasty (corrective ear surgery) in fourth, and gynaecomastia in third, with blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) in second and rhinoplasty being the most popular.
Breast augmentation including breast implants and enlargements was the most popular procedure for women, followed by eyelid surgery, breast reduction procedures, face / neck lifts, and tummy tucks in fifth. In all, UK plastic surgeons performed 36,482 procedures in 2009, which is an increase of 6.7% over 2008 levels. Not all procedures grew in popularity, however.
Women decided to have 8% fewer facelifts in 2009. Instead, they chose to have procedures that are more economical and just fix the areas of their face that bothered them the most. As a result, eyelid surgery, nose jobs, and brow lifts increased anywhere from 6% to 43%.
