Most California Drivers Aware Of Speeding, Cell Phone Accident Hazards, But Risk It Anyway

A new study shows that most American drivers are aware of the dangers that come with speeding

, or using cell phones while driving, but far too many of them continue to engage in such practices anyway. Call it an appetite for self-destruction, but there seem to be far too many motorists who are clearly aware that running red lights, using cell phones and driving 15 mph over the posted speed limits can lead to an accident, but can't stop themselves from doing so.

It's a fascinating study because it proves to California car accident lawyers and highway safety advocates that highway safety issues are incredibly complex. You can legislate highway safety as much as you want, and spend tons of money on education and awareness campaigns, but many accidents continue to occur because of motorists' negligence and their failure to use their common sense.

The study was conducted by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, and included US residents aged above 16 years of age. The overwhelming finding from the study was that most motorists prioritize highway safety, and are disgusted with practices like speeding, running red lights, driving under the influence, using cell phones while driving and driving in a state of fatigue. However for many people, this disgust with such practices doesn't extend to avoiding such practices themselves. There is very clearly a significant disconnect that exists between the large numbers of people who are aware that such practices are hazardous, and the significant number of people who admit to engaging in such behavior.

For instance, according to the study, 92% of the respondents confirmed that it was unacceptable for a motorist to be texting or using cell phones while driving. However, 24% of the respondents admitted to having texted or e-mailed while driving, at least once over the previous month. When it comes to speeding, two thirds of the respondents in the survey said that they found speeding to be dangerous behavior. However, 46% of the respondents admitted to driving 15 mph above the posted speed limit at least once over the previous month.

Red light running is a vastly underestimated cause of accidents in the US. It also seems to be one of the most unpopular behaviors among motorists, at least on paper. 98% of the respondents said that running a red light was a highly unacceptable driving behavior. However, almost 25% of them admitted to running a red light over the previous month. In 2009, approximately 700 people were killed in accidents that were caused when a driver ran a red light.

According to the survey, 96% of drivers believe that it is highly unsafe to drive when you're tired, sleepy or fatigued. However, awareness of the dangers of drowsy driving doesn't seem to prevent many motorists from driving in such a condition anyway. Approximately 25% of the respondents had operated a vehicle while sleepy at least once over the past month, and 18% had actually done so several times.
