The actual definition of a cult varies greatly, but in general it refers to a cohesive social group bound together by veneration of the same atypical belief system. Popular perception often portrays cults as being violent, destructive maniacs with loaded
paint ball guns, and while most cults are certainly controversial, they dont always carry out extreme acts. Manson Family This infamous cult was founded by Charles Manson. After a string of robbery-related arrests and then eventually being released from prison for trafficking young women in 1967 he moved the Haight-Ashbury region of San Francisco during the peak of the Hippie movement. He assumed a guru persona and settled with a 23 year old student named Mary. And he eventually convinced eighteen other women to join his family. After establishing his family he moved them into a ranch owned by George Spahn and began preaching to his followers about of his predictions of dangerous social disturbances and uprisings. He utilized pop culture such as the Beatles White Album to accompany and advance his claims. On August 8, 1969 Manson infamously told his flock that now is the time for Helter Skelter and the family went on to commit several murders over the next two days, including the brutal murder of pregnant actress Sharon Tate. Although Mason did not commit any of the actual killings, he was held responsible by the courts and sentenced to death. Mansons initial death sentence was overturned by a 1972 Supreme Court decision outlawing extant death penalties in various states. He currently resides in a Southern California state prison for life.About the Author:
