Creating your website with the use of a Content Management System (CMS) is the way to go nowadays. That's because a CMS allows you to create and update your website without ever learning how to program. It's interface is like a text editor and so you can, in theory, find your way around a CMS and publish your web page.
But with so many Content Management System (CMS) out there how would you know which CMS is best for you? How would you know that you are making the right decision?
In the case of technology, the simple rule of the thumb is follow the crowd. Let's face it - not everyone can be technically oriented when creating websites. So that means if a CMS is being used ubiquitously then that means it has the seal of approval for the general consumer as being easy to use. Now I think that is a safe presumption.
The CMS market so far has three big contenders. You have Drupal, Joomla, and WordPress. So out of this three how can you figure out which on is the most popular one?
The one place to go is Google Trends. And we have done the research for you. Please see the graph down below:
The graph actually shows the trend in the search volumes for these three different CMS. So as you can see, in 2005, the three weren't so far from each other in terms of search volumes over the internet. And in 2008 it was a race between WordPress and Joomla. The year 2009-2010 was the defining moment as to which users most prefer. And now the trend is in WordPress' favor.
Why such popularity?
Well, for one, you have to understand the WordPress economy. The CMS is free. Also the themes - which are the visual interface of your website is free. The plugins - which gives your website additional features such as an image gallery, contact us form, slideshow, etc. is free as well. And businesses and companies are happy to do develop free WordPress components because it is one way for them to get noticed and sell support services for premium components.
But it's npt only end-users who are jumping into the WordPress bandwagon. The developers are getting in as well. That's because it is much faster and less expensive to develop a WordPress website compared to any other tool that gives heaps of functionality.
What makes it more attractive is the multitude of free WordPress tutorials online. If you put your heart and focus into it, you can have a website in a day!
So what's stopping you from building your own website with WordPress?
