Mothers Day Gifts Misses By My Brother
Every kid wants the best for his/ her mom but for some reason, boys and men have more misses than hits when it comes to giving mom a gift. Here are some gifts that my brother used to get mom and that were always a miss.
A No. 1 mom trophy
We have two aunts who will send mom a vase or any similar decoration item that takes up a lot of space every Christmas. Mom puts it out moving some of the stuff she really loves into the attic just so the gifts don't go to waste. The year my brother got her a tacky kind of trophy that had No. 1 Mom written on it in bright gold was a disaster. It was heavy and ugly and mom had to put it out somewhere or she'd hurt my brother's feelings. In two months the trophy broke taking with it at least two years worth of vases from my aunts.
Lesson Learnt: Don't get stuff that you know your mom doesn't have space for around the house.
A customized apron
The apron my brother got wasn't an ordinary apron with my mom's name on it or something, it had a picture of her on one particularly bad thanksgiving when she was sick but still cooking in the kitchen, blown up and printed on fabric that itched. Mom used it to polish silverware instead.
Lesson Learnt: Never give a gift that reminds a woman she has to cook and never try and immortalize bad or embarrassing family moments.
Flowers from the garden
Mom likes to garden, she has a small flower patch that she tends to diligently but she likes growing vegetables more. One mothers day when my brother was low on funds he uprooted some of mom's best flowers and gave them to her because she "liked nature and stuff". Mom cried. Thankfully the Mothers day gift baskets from my dad and grandma helped calm her down but Dad had to order her one of those Mothers day fruit bouquets (they look like flowers and she isn't a fan of picking real flowers) just to stop her crying.
Lesson Learnt: Don't destroy the stuff that mom spends lots of time growing
Word to the wise: everyone loves their mother; the real problem is translating those feelings into a gift on Mothers day. Like all gifts for women, the rule is to not try too hard. Your mom knows you love so a simple fruit bouquet is more than enough to make her smile.
