Motorbike Insurance

There are different types of motorbikes in the market

, and on the roads. Motorbikes are generally classified into six categories: sports, cruiser, dirt bikes, touring, dual-purpose, and standard. There are other variations of motorbikes like scooters, mopeds, and three wheelers, but bikers generally scorn them, and do not consider them true motorbikes.

Motorbikes have become a very popular form of transport with the younger generation. Motorbikes are a convenient way to get around especially in city traffic. There are motorbike clubs also, and some of them only allow members owning a particular brand of motorbike, like Harley Davidson, Triumph, Sunbeam, etc.

If you are a motorbike owner, then you need to get it insured, as it is illegal to ride a motorbike without motorbike insurance. You can get three types of motorbike insurances in the UK. These are third party, third party fire, and theft and comprehensive insurances. Third party insurance is the most common as it is the cheapest and the minimum insurance that is required to allow you to ride your motorbike on public roads.

Third party insurance is an insurance cover that covers you in case of an accident by paying for any damages caused by your motorbike to a person or the property/belongings of a person. You do not get compensated for any injuries or damage to your motorbike. In the second type, your motorbike is insured against fire and theft, and it carries the same cover as third party.

This type of insurance is preferred by bikers who fear that their bikes could be stolen or live in areas where motorbike thefts are common. The third type of insurance, which is the most expensive, is comprehensive insurance. In this, all damages, injuries, and losses are covered, whether you injure someone or injure yourself, or damage the property of a person or cause harm. Your insurance company will settle all claims.

Making a choice of the type of motorbike insurance that you require will really depend on you. The insurance companies will offer you motorbike insurance depending on your age and the type of motorcycle you have and the area that you live in.

Bikers who have cruisers or expensive heavy sports bikes go for comprehensive insurance, as for them their motorbikes are prized possessions, and some of them are very passionate about their bikes.

If you participate in motorbike racing events, you should let the insurance company know, as some of them do not insure motorbikes for such events. Always remember to spend sometime in reading the fine print of the insurance policy. A number of motorbike owners only discover what they are not covered for, when they try to file a claim. You must carry the motorbike insurance certificate with you whenever you wheel out your motorbike. Make it a habit to renew your insurance on time.
