Motorola Droid Razr Maxx Review

Did you buy a Motorola Droid RAZR when it came out in November

? That's too bad. Motorola has come out with a new version that puts the original Droid RAZR to shame. What's the difference? Well the big difference is the battery. The original Droid RAZR only had a 1780 mAh battery. The Droid RAZR Maxx comes with an amazing 3300 mAh battery and is reported to give you 21 hours of talk time and could even give you up to 15 days of stand-by time between charges. Since both the Droid RAZR and Droid RAZR Maxx have batteries built in that cannot be replaced, the option of an extended battery for the Droid RAZR was impossible. The new Droid RAZR Maxx has solved that problem.

The Droid RAZR Maxx is a bit thicker than the Droid RAZR. The original Droid RAZR was touted as the thinnest Smartphone on the market, only 7.1mm thick. As you can see from the photo below, the Droid RAZR had a bit of an odd shape, being thicker at the top to accommodate the camera. The Droid RAZR Maxx just basically filled in the gap, adding a bit of weight as well. The RAZR Maxx only weighs 5.1 ounces whereas the Droid RAZR only weighs 4.48 ounces. That's a good thing, as the Droid RAZR was almost too light. It felt a bit insubstantial unless you purchased a Droid RAZR case. It's still wide (about 2.71 inches) and tall (more than 5 inches). That hasn't changed from the original Droid RAZR.

The Droid RAZR Maxx still comes with the Kevlar back and the Gorilla Glass. All in all, the Droid RAZR Maxx is pretty impressive with its LTE radio, 1.2GHz dual-core processor and 1GB of RAM. It comes with a 16GB MicroSD card (can be upgraded to 32GB) to compliment the 16GB internal storage. Both the Droid RAZR and the Droid RAZR Maxx have a 4.3" Super AMOLED Advanced Display. That sounds impressive, but it isn't actually as slick as Samsung's display. The 8.0 megapixel back camera is great and the phone also has a 1.3 megapixel front facing camera for video conferencing. This is something I have missed on my Droid X.

The Droid RAZR Maxx also has some nice new software and app features such as the Smart Actions. Similar to Tasker, Smart Actions lets you choose a set of rules that trigger particular actions. It's a great way to manage your app behavior. All in all, this phone is looking pretty great. I am due for an upgrade from Verizon next month and unless something even greater comes out, this new phone has my vote. Sure, it's pricey at $299, but I'm worth it.
