The highly trained Mountain Rescue Team in England is made up of eight regional teams who are actually part of the police and often work closely with the and ambulance services and Royal Air Force. For example, the Bolton Mountain Rescue team is part of the the Mid-Pennine Search and Rescue Organisation (MPSRO) which covers search and rescue in the caves, moors and hills in West Yorkshire, Lancashire, the Pennines and Greater Manchester.

They are called by dialling the emergency services (999) and are a voluntary body and a registered charity in their own right.
