Move From College Into The Real World With The Right Stuff!

Congratulations, graduate

Congratulations, graduate. Commencement and parties are winding down. One door is closing; a new door is opening. The world is at your feet. Time to pack up and move out. If you are looking around your place and noting that you have way too much stuff, consolidating your belongings may feel so overwhelming that you are considering taking them all with you or walking out empty-handed.

This article will provide practical tips to streamline moving from your college space to your new destination. No matter where you are headed, you are making another big transition. Your college life is ending and a new life is beginning. You are going forward; not backward. Lighten your load so you can move with ease.

As you sort through your belongings, you want to keep a lot of things. While some of your possessions expressed who you were as a college student, they probably wont serve the person you are about to become. In fact, looking around your space, you may notice that many things are out-of-date!

Right now, its time to decide what you want to keep, and what you want to let go of.

The Three-Pile Method

Pile #1: Keep Items you want to take with you.

Pile #2: Store Items you no longer need now, but will put in storage.

Pile #3: Let Go Items youre ready to part with.

If you dont immediately know which pile an item belongs in, ask yourself these four questions:

Do I love it?

Do I use or wear it?

Do I need it?

Does it express who I am now?

If you cant answer yes to at least one of the questions, its time to let the item go. Put all of the Let Go things from pile #3 in a box or bag and decide how youll get rid of them. However you decide to dispose of your items, though, make sure to get them out of your space and near the exit door. Then it will be easier to take the pile to its new destination.

The items in Pile #2 arent playing a big role in your life at the moment. Maybe you arent sure you will ever need or wear them again, but you arent ready to toss them. Put this stuff in a bag or box marked storage. When you arrive at your destination, make sure to store it. Do not set it out in your new space!

Congratulations! You have just eliminated a bunch of stuff you no longer need, and you are left with the things you love and will use. Because you have eliminated a lot of things, you will really appreciate the possessions you have chosen to keep.

Notice how you are feeling. Youre connected to your possessions, so by clearing some of them, you change yourself, which will help you adapt to the transition taking place as you move from college into the world.

Letting go of some of your belongings can be sad or even scary, but only if you see it as losing something. Instead, think of what you gain by lightening your load. You are about to begin a new life, and in order to make room for the new, you have to let go of the old. By clearing away your outdated things, you open a window of opportunity for new people, places and experiences to enter your life. Likewise, if you drive away with excess stuff, you may have a harder time adapting to and welcoming the new.

Remember, you are affected by your belongings. Updating and consolidating your possessions BEFORE leaving college will help you transition to your new life in the world.
