Moving To Costa Rica For Retirement Has Conditions

The prospect of retiring to a tropical climate has some people looking into moving out of the United States and setting up residency in Costa Rica

. The search for a house is one thing to consider when making a permanent move to the Central American, but other factors that affect the legal immigration to the jungles or beaches of the fertile country require some help from a company that is well versed in all of the cultural and government regulated residential laws.

Just like people moving up from South and Central America need to register with the Department of Immigration and Homeland Security within the United States the same rules that apply to legally crossing the border into America require a person or family that is moving to Costa Rica to obtain the correct visa and file for residency as a legal immigrant.

Although the country does not require a US citizen to give up their nationality or surrender their passport upon arrival into their borders, there are a number of regulations that must be adhered to. For one thing a person that is living in Costa Rica under what is called "perpetual tourist" status has no rights inside the country and must leave the borders every 90 days for a 3 day period before being allowed to return and take up their life. If working or operating a business a person must file for another type of residency status.

Pensioned persons that are living in Costa Rica are required to show their passport, marriage license (if applicable) and proof of at least $1,000 of income from a retirement account each month before being granted permission to live as a retiree in the country. If not drawing a pension the individual that is moving to Costa Rica must show that they are receiving interest from their accounts in the US totaling no less than $2,500. However there are other options for people that want to know how to retire in Costa Rica.

One way is as an investor in the country with at least $200,000 in the country's economy. Fortunately that figure can be considered in the purchase of a home. Finally if a person marries a native born Costa Rican or is the biological parent of a child born in the country they can apply for residency and be permitted to live and work in the Central American country.

Depending upon the type of investments they have, money coming in from a retirement or investment fund or the their desire to remain a "perpetual tourist" the country of Costa Rica offers a wealth of leisure activities that can make living in the tropical region of the world a very rewarding venture.
