Moving Transition Tips

Moving is hard

Moving is hard. We have to pick up our entire home, leave friends and neighbors behind, and go to an entirely new area. It can be quite scary, especially for young children. Here are a few tips to try with your move to make the transition a little smoother for your family.

Check out your new city as a family. Find out where your children will be going to school and take a fieldtrip there to show them. If you are moving a short distance you can do this before the move, otherwise make it one of the first things you do once you have moved to your new home.

Be prepared. Talk to professional Utah movers before move-out-day. Have clearly defined expectations for your Utah movers. Make a plan of when your Utah movers need to be there, and when you need to do other things such as turning off the electricity to your old home and turning it on in your new home.

Don't fall for signing leases on apartments that you have never personally been to. Apartments will always look better online than they do in person. If you can't check out the place yourself, ask someone you know in the area to do it for you.

Meet new people and try to make friends with your neighbor. This can be a very intimidating thing to do, but it can really help. Remember to go where the people go, since you won't meet any new people when you sit watching TV all day at home.

Remember to use your money wisely. When we move in to a new home it is natural to want to go out and buy things to make our new home look pretty. As long as you have money to do this, it is fine. Otherwise, do the best you can with what you can until you can save up for that new bedroom set or couch.

Get involved in the community. When there are activities going on, get out of the house and go to them. Getting your kids involved in something other than homework or watching TV will keep them from falling in to a rut.

Do a little research on your town. Find out interesting trivia about it and find things that can interest your family about it. The more you talk up a town, the more exciting it will seem.
