Mugging Elderly Grandparents Of Their Hard Earned Right To Social Security

One of the best government programmes is Social Security

. It has helped in a big way to eliminate poverty among seniors. A good number of them lived and died in a ghastly way that can be compared to descriptions of want by Charles Dickens. Sans Social Security about half of all the elderly persons of America aged 65 and above would be in the poverty zone. If Social Security continues it would be less than 10%.

According to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities nearly 90% of the people above 65 years benefit from some income coming from Social Security. For over half of the elderly it comprises the bulk of their earnings. For a good number it is the only earning they survive on.

To the ordinary viewer it comes as a sense of outrage to see an elderly individual being mugged in an elevator or a lobby. But when the Wall Street fat cats have their say and the Social Security is hacked away then these people are not thought of to be muggers but members of a respectable and enlightened society.

The call of the hour is checking on reality. Targeting Social Security is not only cruel but it is unnecessary. It has to be stopped.

The demagogues are trying to convince the public that Social Security cannot be sustained and that it one of the big reasons for the budget deficits. Nothing could be a bigger lie. The Economic Policy Institute has explained Social Security is emphatically not the cause of the federal governments long-term deficit, since it is prohibited from borrowing and must pay all benefits out of dedicated tax revenues and savings in its trust funds.

Roosevelt was loud and clear about the pivotal role of payroll taxes that are used to fund Social Security. It gave those who benefited a legal, moral and political right to these benefits. Roosevelt had strongly said, With those taxes in there, no damn politician can ever scrap my Social Security program.

Strong opposition to Social Securitys right is nothing new. But today when deficit-hysteria is loud, this vital retirement plan is being unfairly and unjustly dumped together with Medicare as just an entitlement plan something driving the deficits of the federal budgets. The costs pertaining to Medicare is something serious but the cause is not far to seek horrendous increase in health care expenses in general.
