The name Munnar, in the regions native language, is supposed to mean Three rivers, probably because of the position of the hill station at the conflux of the of Madhurapuzha, Nallathanni and Kundaly rivers. Munnar is a portion of the Kannan Devan Hills village which belongs to the largest panchayat in Idikki district. Tea cultivated in Munnar is known throughout the world as one of the best tea varieties. Tea plantation is extensive in this hill station. Munnar is covered by the highest tea gardens in the whole country. Waterfalls, wildlife sanctuaries, tea gardens and mountain haze, if put together, is what forms the perfect picture of the hill station experience. The beauty is so heartwarming; it is often to describe the exhilarated experience in words. Munnar has a more or less salubrious weather all year round. Low-drifting clouds and mist-filled valleys dominate the picturesque landscape. Life and peace seem to live here in a perfect balance. Numerous tourists visit the location just to experience the incomparable level of peace one can experience here.

Munnar also has some unique flora and fauna, which can barely be found at other places in India. Neelakurinchi is one such flower which blossoms once in twelve years, and when it does, the whole valley turns blue in colour. When it blooms, the whole hill station turns into a blue heaven. The last time it had bloomed was in 2006. It is also possible to locate the Nilagiri tahr, a rare breed of goats belonging to mountainous regions. This region was also the summer capital of the British during their rule and even today, Munnar stays it touch with its old charm roots. Exciting activities in the hill station includes paragliding, tour to Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, boating and visit to plantations.

Munnar is seated at an altitude of 1500 meters above sea level and has one of the tallest hills in South India. Therefore, travellers with a knack for trekking visit this town quite often. In recent day, many forests have been cut down in this region to make space for more and more tea plantations. Flora and fauna have been affected greatly in the area because of this. But thankfully, some regions such as Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary, Anamudi Shola National Park, Kurinjimala Sanctuary are dedicated completely to preserving the remaining plants and animals safely in a natural environment.
