Museums in the Bay Area for Families

There's really nothing more fun than exploring one of the museums in the Bay Area as a family on a Saturday afternoon. The problem is that there are just so many museum options that you may not even know where to begin. There are plenty of museums offering hands-on fun for the whole family. Here are just a couple of options we thinks are excellent for families with kids of all ages:

The Exploratorium

As you can probably guess from its name, the Exploratorium is a museum built for exploration. It's really a science museum, but students can learn everything firsthand. It's way more fun than listening to a lecture. One of the exhibits at the museum is all about seeing. It lets families explore how we see and how light works with our eyes. There's another exhibit focused on hearing and how the human ear and brain work together to sort through the myriad of sounds that are always around us. Yet another exhibit focuses on the mind and how it works. All of these hands-on exhibits are great fun for the whole family, and even adults will probably learn something they didn't know before.

Another of the interesting exhibits at this museum is the Tactile Dome. In the Dome, you get a chance to experience things with every sense except for your eyes! There are hidden objects in the Dome that it is your mission to find, and it may be tougher than you think to navigate the world without your senses. This exhibit is great for older children, but it might be a little frightening for littler kids. For this reason, it's a good idea to plan on experiencing the Dome along with your kids.

Each day there is a different schedule of live exhibitions. Artists and scientists show off their skills as they help you explore light, sound, electricity, and other things. Since the exhibits are always changing, be sure to check the daily schedule each time you visit the museum so that you can be sure to catch the exhibits that are up for that day.

Museum of Craft and Folk Art

The Museum of Craft and Folk Art focuses on the indigenous cultures of the Bay Area. It features Mexican style art as well as folk art from various Native American tribes from the area. At the museum, your family can explore a variety of ever-changing exhibits that show typical folk arts and crafts right from your area.

Many times the exhibits feature the works of local artists who have used folk arts and crafts as springboards for more modern artistic pursuits. These exhibits are excellent ways to explore the effects of past culture on the present and the future.

One of the fun things your family can do at this museum is to take folk art classes together. The classes work with materials like the red clay prevalent California folk art, textiles, and even found objects. In these classes, you and your kids can work on interesting art projects using old fashioned tools and techniques. It's a great way to while away a Saturday afternoon and come home with something to show for it!
