My 12 Most Powerful Video Marketing Tips
Video marketing is one of the most powerful and efficient marketing and communication tool that we can use online. When you learn the ropes of online video marketing, it increases your conversions, helps you build relationships with customers or potential customers, brings automated traffic, and strengthen your online presence and personal brand. But this is only if you know how to do it. Here I reveal my 12 most powerful video marketing tips:
1- Getting the right equipment
A lot of people ask me the kind of equipment I use. I use a flip cam. My favorite is the Kodak Zi8. Its a great pocket camera, very easy to use and pretty cheap for what it does. It has an internal microphone that records in mono but the microphone jack allows you to record with an external microphone which will make the sound much better. You can buy it online for around $150. Its very easy to carry. Its small so you can carry it in a handbag. It has a little USB port, so once youve done the recording, you just plug it into your computer and upload the video.
2- Good lighting
You must have good lighting. Lighting is so important. You should have lighting shining on your face so it illuminates you. This will make your video look better so much more high quality and professional. You do not need expensive equipment. Just use a good quality lamp and make it point towards your face (not on the side or behing you).
3- Look straight at the camera
You should look directly at the camera the entire time. In order to really come across authentic and trustworthy, you have to look at people straight in the eyes. Its like having a conversation with somebody in real life.
4- Get organized
Prepare what you are going to say before you start to record the video. You can, for instance, make an outline of your key points. Make sure you list the main points you want to get across in the video. However I dont suggest you have a script. Because you will probably end up reading it and you wont come across natural and authentic. And once youve written down your key points, rehearse what youre going to say once or twice.
5- Hook the viewer in the first 15 seconds: mention the benefit
You only have about 15 to 30 seconds to impress your viewer before he hits the back button. So you need to hook the viewer into watching the rest of the video in the first 15 seconds. Tell them why they should be watching the video, i.e. what is the benefit for them and how the video is going to help them.
6- Be yourself
Just be yourself. A lot of people, when they are in front of the camera, turn into somebody else. They get uncomfortable and nervous so they change completely. If you think you dont look good on camera and that makes you uncomfortable. Let me tell you something that hopefully will help you: the way you look on camera is the way you look. Yep! :o) So get over it! Your viewers are not looking for top models; they are just looking for normal people, like them; someone they can trust and relate to; a knowledgeable and trustworthy person who is going to help them solve their problems. So relax and just be yourself.
7- Do a proper keyword research
Keyword research is a critically important aspect of the process. The purpose of the keyword research is to find profitable words that many people are typing in search engines to find your product or services. If your video marketing strategy is targeting the wrong keywords, the search engines and customers may never find you, resulting in a potential loss of a lot of money. If you want to stay competitive, you cannot afford that. A common misconception about keyword research is to believe you already know which words a customer would type in Google to find your site or product and which words are the good ones (i.e. profitable). Believe me; you don't; not until youve done some proper research. So do some proper keyword research.
8- Use an attention-grabbing title
Make sure you brainstorm the title to make it powerful and catchy. You can for instance mention the benefit for the viewer in your title. So make it all about them. Always try think: whats in it for them. And try to be as detailed as possible. You can also use a title that picks curiosity or ask a question. Make sure to do some good brainstorming before choosing the title of your video. Here are examples of good and bad titles for a weight loss video:
Bad: Lose weight fast
Good: Discover how to lose weight fast
Better: Discover how I lost 20 pounds in 30 days
Much better: Secret weight loss method: Discover how I lost 20 pounds in 30 days
9- Have a clear CTA
You need to have a clear call to action. You need to tell the viewers exactly what you would like them to do next; otherwise its likely that they wont do it. If youre doing a video for a squeeze page, tell them to put their details in the opt-in box if they want the product youre offering and its benefits. If its a video for blog, ask them to leave a comment or share the video with their friends. If its a Youtube video, tell them to go to your website and give them the address. In addition to telling them to go to your website, you need to have written as well. So you need to edit the video and add a written CTA at the end. If you have a PC, you can use Windows Movie Maker (which is free). If you have a Mac, you can use iMovie. Camtasia is another great option as well. Thats the one I am personally using.
10- Add your link to the video & description
As Ive just mentioned, if you want people to visit your website, you need to have your link written in a CTA at the end of the video. You also need to put it in the description of the video when youre uploading it to a video sharing site. And the link should be at the beginning of the description. It should be the first thing written. It also needs to be the full URL (starting with http) so the link is clickable.
11- Add keyword to the file name, title, description & tags
When youre uploading a video to any video sharing site (to Youtube for instance), you should add the keywords to the file name, title, description and tags. This means that, before uploading the file, change its name to include the keywords youre targeting. And when you are filling in the video settings, make sure you also add the keywords to the title, description and tags.
12- Video distribution
To get a lot of traffic, you want your video to appear on as many sites as possible, so a lot of people can watch it. So you need to blast out your video on the net. Uploading your video manually to each site is way too tedious and time consuming. This is why distribution software and applications come so handy. With software like Traffic Geyser or SENuke, you can spread your video to tens of sites in one go. This saves you so much time and effort. Its just fantastic. If youre on a tight budget there are some free or more affordable options. TubeMogul is completely free and enables you to upload to 20 sites. HeySpread is another video distribution service. It is a pay as you go service. Uploading a video cost $5 cents. And you can upload to 9 different sites.
