My Most Precious Thanksgiving Gift

I have been a teacher at a local high school for 14 years

. In the past 14 years, I have received countless gifts from my students. Some are precious. Some are ordinary. But they all represent my students' deep and sincere blessing to me. However, I still can not get a leather bag out of my mind even though it is cheap and average.

Alice was a new student who just moved to our small town with her mother. Her father was killed by a car crash before she moved here. She was shy and silent when I met her for the first time. The students around her did not show much mercy for her. Instead, they just cut a deeper wound into her broken heart with their cold laughs and indifference. Thus, a silent and shy Alice became even more silent and shier. As her English teacher, I really wanted to do something for her in a hope to help her find her confidence back.

On a snowy day with thrilling wind sweeping across the small town, I made a visit to her house for the first time. That was a small house with two stories. Obviously, the thick snow accumulated in front of the door way seemed in the care of nobody. I knocked on door for several times and waited a while before she came for the door. She was the only one in the house. The room was dark even though there were a small light illuminated. She was doing her homework before I came here. She still had not have dinner even though it was already 8 o'clock at night. I found the refrigerator was almost empty except for a piece of bread and a sandwich as I wanted to make dinner for her. She told me her mother would come back 2 hours later when she finishes her job at a fast food restaurant. She did not want to call her mother as she knew her mother was already pretty busy and tired. I sat there and talked to her about everything, touching her soft hair. During our conversation, we had laughs which were things she had not experienced for a long time. Actually, it is not easy to open a closed heart of a teenager girl who even has lost her father. Even though I made it, I still wanted to do more for her.

The other day in the class, I announced to all the students that we should see Alice as a member of our family and we should show her the best side of us, giving her warm and help that she is supposed to have. In her rest years of high school, she did well in her performance and made a lot of friends. Fortunately, she finally was admitted the state university.

On Thanksgiving Day, a ring bell occurred as I was in the middle of preparing thanksgiving dinner for my family. As I opened the door, I saw a beautiful and shining girl standing right before me. She was nobody but Alice. She handed me a leather bag as her thanksgiving gift to me. I gave it an all-round look, feeling very delighted. That night, she shared an unforgettable night with me and my families.

Each time I carry the leather bag she sent to me, I would naturally think of the importance of giving a child a healthy environment to grow up and learn things and the duty as a teacher.
