He had some broken bones, as if that was not bad enough we find after he was in a coma for about 10 days, we find out he had Brain Trauma. He could not feed himself
What is a traumatic brain injury?
A traumatic brain injury (TBI) is defined as a blow or jolt to the head that disrupts the function of the brain. The severity of such an injury may range from "mild," i.e., a brief change in mental status or consciousness to "severe," i.e., an extended period of unconsciousness or amnesia after the injury.
My son had mild brain traumatic that result in short. For some they have long-term problems with independent function.
How many people have TBI?
My wife and myself did not know any thing about traumatic brain injury. So we begin to talk to doctors and did our own research.
What We Find Out About TBI
Of the 1.4 million who sustain a TBI each year in the United States:
50,000 die;
235,000 are hospitalized; and
1.1 million are treated and released from an emergency department.1
This is what we find out what occur with Brain Trauma.
With trauma, changes occur in the brain which require monitoring to prevent further damage. My son had 24 hour care he was never was left along, he would tried to do harm to his self.
The reason is the brain's size frequently increases after a severe head injury. This is called brain swelling and occurs when there is an increase in the amount of blood to the brain.
Very strong medications was administered to him. Some medications which help to draw fluid back out of his brain and into blood vessels that may be useful. Some medications help by decreasing the metabolic requirements of the brain. Other medications increase blood flow into the brain which can help diminish the spiral effect caused by brain swelling.
What are the long-term consequences of TBI?
According to one study I came across, about 40% of those hospitalized with a TBI had at least one unmet need for services one year after their injury. The most frequent unmet needs were:
Improving memory and problem solving;
Managing stress and emotional upsets;
Controlling one's temper; and
Improving one's job skills.6
We believe our son will be back to 90% hisself.
