My Top 5 Mlps (master Limited Partnerships)

Hopefully you have read some of my other articles on the power of Master Limited

Partnerships (if not you should as soon as you finish this Top 5 list).

One of the best things about MLPs is that they not only pass through the profits to investors, but they can pass through tax deductions too. This makes a large part of your earnings with them Tax-Free as long as the company has new projects going (which provide plenty of expenses to be written off by the partners).

Here they are my top 5 picks as of December 3rd, 2009.

Atlas Pipeline Partners LP (APL)

Atlas Pipeline Partners, is a natural gas distributor with about 8,000 miles of intrastate gas gathering pipelines. The Pennsylvania based company has had yields as high as 26%, and is a solid MLP play!

Energy Transfer Partners L.P. (ETP)

I have written about this company in other articles. They are a solid play that has had yields as much as 10%. The company stores and transports natural gas through its pipeline systems. It is traded on the NYSE.

Linn Energy (LINE)

Linn is actually an LLC (investment works a lot like an MLP). The company owns natural gas reserves in the Texas Panhandle and Oklahoma, and in the Los Angeles area (there may be state tax consequences, whereby you might have to file in all 3 states if your investment is large enough, check with your tax advisor).

Ferrellgas Partners LP (FGP)

Ferrellgas Partners, is a propane distribution company which has had yields of over 14%. This Overland Park, Kansas company distributes gas in all 50 states (again, check with your tax advisor).

Terra Nitrogen (TNH)

Terra Nitrogen is a Sioux City, Iowa-based company. They produce and distribute nitrogen fertilizer products. The company, which trades on the New York Stock Exchange and has had yields as high as 9%.
