My first Phish Show

My first Phish Show

My first Phish Show

We arrived early during the day the parking lot was mostly empty except for a few vendors setting up their tents. We decided to park next to a guy setting up his camping stove with the intent on selling a few chicken wraps. More on this guy later. I pull my truck in and begin to get out my chairs and cooler. After we get set up my girlfriend and I decide to take a stroll down to the vendor tents to see what they have. The tents were alive with activity people pulling merchandise out from of everywhere. I find out later many of the people follow Phish around and sell at every show. Patchwork Bags, Hats, Hemp Jewelry too many hippie accessories to mention. It really turned out to be a small tent city of vendors far more than we had seen from where we parked. The people were as unique as the items they were selling it was hippie haven! All of this was new to me after all I had never been to any event like it before. After an hour or so touring the tent city we bought a patchwork bag had to look the part after all and we went back to our cooler to watch the people come in.

The fellow next to us had finished setting up his stove and began to cook. He and I began to talk and were fast friends by the end of the night. Many of you who go to Phish shows on a regular basis have very likely met or seen him before. If you tried one of his chicken wraps you no doubt remember him. After talking for a bit it turns out he has been selling his confections for more than 35 years first starting with the Grateful Dead and then moving on to other shows following whoever is touring at the moment. By now the parking lot is beginning to fill up and the real show is starting. I soon discovered the true show is not the band it's the people who attend these events. So many different types of people some dressed in hippie clothes others look like they just woke up no doubt feeling the effects of the night before or.

People were walking around carrying what must have been the new hippie accessories for the day a 12 pack of beer with ice in it. No need for the cooler here just open the cardboard and pour some ice in hey it works. By now even more traveling vendors had shown up selling all kinds of things from drink cozies to t-shirts to flashing lights and other items I cant mention. People were dressed in all sorts of outfits so many hippies I really was caught off guard. The outfits were so unique very nice summer dresses accented with all sorts of hippie accessories beautiful patchwork bags purses and backpacks made from hemp with multicolor feathers in their hair it was quite the scene. The people were remarkably friendly from what I have been told this is very common at any Phish show seems the music and the band itself promotes this atmosphere. One thing I found very interesting was the total lack of security and the police at least in uniforms were no where to be seen.

I asked my Greek cooking buddy next to me about this and he said it is not uncommon at Phish shows seems the crowds are better behaved than at other events. People were openly selling beer and food no one had a license and yet the cops didn't seem to care. In a time where so many people are tight asses about this kind of thing it was refreshing to see it was a free spirit atmosphere to say the least. I know the next time Phish comes to town I will be there and I hope to see my new friend when we return next spring as the tour passes back by. If you have never been to one of their shows you should even if you don't want to actually see the band after all the real show is outside in the parking lot.
