My thoughts and tips on Oil Lantern and Decorative Lanterns

Flickering light

What is it about a warm fire that just makes you feel cozy and relaxed? I love a camp fire, a warm fire in the fireplace or even just a scented candle burning on a table. The best though, is an old timey Oil Lantern. You know, the ones they used on railroads or the ones they lit the streets with before electricity. There is something about them that just warms my soul. I always keep one handy in case the power goes out. Sometimes, I like to pretend the power is out and turn off all the lights, light an oil lantern and read by the flickering fire, just pretend my lantern is a camping lantern. I even have a few hanging in my garden as decorative lanterns. I have citronella oil in them and light them when I cook out. Not only are they functional, but they're just so pretty! All of my oil lanterns are made by V&O. They have the best price and the most choices as far as size and color. I can even buy the replacement wicks and oil for them. Woodstove Outlet carries a wonderful selection of V&O Oil Lanterns that are perfect for home, camping and decoration!

From my own experience owning and enjoying many Oil Lantern over the years I would like to offer a few tips on how to get the most from your Oil Lantern.

Proper maintenance of your oil lantern will lead to brighter lighting, more oil-efficiency, and longer product life and of course, reliability. Here are some suggestions for cleaning, refilling and maintaining the life of your oil lantern.

1. Clean the globe - to remove the globe it will depend on what type of lantern you have. If you have a cold blast lantern, grasp the lift ring and lift up, tilt the globe backwards and allow it to go all the way down. If the globe has LOC-NOBs, rotate the globe a quarter turn, and pull the globe out from the wire cross guards. 2. Removing the burner and wick - first remove the burner by turning it until the ears are disengaged. Lift out the burner. Keep the wick between your finger and edge of fuel compartment so that it is wiped dry of excess oil. 3. Trimming the wick - cut straight across with scissors. A straight wick will burn more evenly, providing better light. 4. Replacing the burner and wick - put wick back into fuel compartment. Lock the burner back into place, making sure it is fitted into both grooves. You can use a piece of tape to make a leader to assist in changing the wick. 5. Lighting - Push the lift lever straight down. Light the lantern, but set the flame a little lower than you want it to burn. Once the lantern has reached operating temperature the flame will burn higher. Light the lantern outside if you plan to use it in freezing weather. This will prevent the glove from breaking.
