Nascar Tickets - Jimmie Johnson Gets First Road Course Win At Sonoma

Jimmie Johnson achieved another career milestone in mid-July with the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series

, crossing the finish line in first place at the Toyota/Save Mart 350 in Sonoma. The June 20 race has officially placed Johnson amongst NASCAR's most elite, as it was his first road course victory in 17 career road course starts.

Johnson went for the gold in Sonoma on June 20 after running in the top five for most of the day, and he got the chance to blast into first in lap 103 when then-race leader Marcos Ambrose made a huge mistake. Ambrose turned off his engine to conserve fuel under caution, but he was penalized shortly thereafter for not maintaining his speed when he couldn't restart his car.

Ambrose's costly blunder allowed second-place driver Jimmie Johnson to slide into first, and Johnson led the final seven laps of the race before zooming into Victory Lane. The Sonoma win at Infineon Raceway marked Johnson's fourth win of the season and his 51st career Cup win, but even more importantly it was his first road course win ever.

Johnson now joins a handful of NASCAR drivers to have conquered both oval and road course tracks, but the heroic driver is still modest about his winnings. Prior to the Sonoma race in June, Johnson spoke with NASCAR.com revealing his mindset going into the Toyota/Save Mart 350.

He said, "This is just an irritation. I know I can do this. I've driven other road course cars, and I'm plenty fast and competitive, and I have run good at times in the Cup car on road courses. I know I have it in me, I just have to figure out how to do it over the course of 90 laps. So it's more of an irritation. It would certainly be good for my resume, but it's not like I feel there was a void there."

Mission accomplished for Jimmie Johnson after the Sonoma race at Infineon Raceway. No. 48 is still holding his dominance over the rest of the Sprint Cup Series going into late June, continuing to run well at races every weekend even though he's gone through a dry spell with wins lately.

Jimmie Johnson is one of those elite Cup drivers who sells NASCAR tickets year after year, and for a good reason. He is the reigning NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion, and he's looking for his fifth consecutive series title in 2010. No. 48 is currently (as of June 24) in second place overall in driver standings, behind only Kevin Harvick for the No. 1 spot.

Now that he's conquered the road course at Sonoma, is Jimmie Johnson back on top to stay? Upcoming races at Loudon (June 27), Daytona (July 3), Chicago (July 10) and Indianapolis (July 25) will reveal whether or not Jimmie Johnson can remain atop the Cup Series or if he's soon to be taken out by drivers like Denny Hamlin or Kyle Busch, two drivers with great records going into the latter part of the season.
