Even with a portrait of one of their recent graduates displayed on one of the walls of the non profit school, the teachers at the guide dogs school for the blind commented on how there was no air of favoritism in their line of work. The dog in the picture is Jeannie the golden retriever and she was assigned to work with a Denver, Colorado lady. The picture of Jeannie was done by an artist who lost her sense of sight a couple of years back. Dealing with blindness and the other events in her life became much easier when she was able to spend some time painting. When she could still see, a lot of her paintings would be on the scenes of Indian life in Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona. Is the situation the same?
It is important that she has time to get her ideas straight before she paints. She is able to paint wondrous things with only a series of pictures in her noggin. She has long stopped with the usage of pins for outlines when she discovered how they could be damaging to the canvasses. It is a good thing that she found another way of doing this process.
When she painted Jeannie, she began by making a line drawing with a crayon. Considering that she was no longer able to see when she painted Jeannie, how was she able to do it?
Actually, the lady that Jeannie was given to was this artist and the instructor at the school described how Jeannie looked when she was transferred to her care. She says the instructor described to her that Jeannie was as warm as the setting sun with a little brown added, a golden bronze. Smelling the pigments allows her to tell them apart and when she paints, she only uses two to three colors of paint.
What she chose to use to paint Jeannie was a small paint brush but when it was time for her tail to be painted, she used her finger instead to achieve that proud and fluffy look. According to this artist, she does not need eyes to see how well she was able to paint Jeannie the dog and she said this with much confidence in her voice. When it comes to the painting of Jeannie, she said that Jeannie growled in approval.
Such is an amazing likeness. Her life after graduating from the guide dogs school for the blind has continued to be productive. Most of the people who graduate here live pretty normal lives. Per man and dog team, the school accumulates about $1700 in expenses but they do not charge anything to the blind students but instead relies on the help of volunteers.
