With new medical research increasingly discouraging the use of antibiotics as a mild

sinus infection treatment, more and more sinusitis patients are considering natural or home remedies. These types of remedies may not be effective as sinus infection treatment in severe or chronic sinusitis, but these are mostly readily available to provide relief from your symptoms.

What are the most common home or natural remedies that I can do?

Wash your nose. Nasal irrigation is an excellent sinus infection treatment to help get over an acute sinus problem. Cleansing your nose tends to mechanically remove the bacteria that are clogging the sinuses and any allergens and remove the pus drainage that is coming from the sinuses.

There are also some herbal remedies that are effective as sinus infection treatment. Licorice - the root of this herb helps reduce inflammation and stimulates the immune system to fight sinus infections. There are two types of licorice products, but be sure to take licorice capsules that boost the immune system and not those for treating ulcers. Eucalyptus is a fragrant herb that soothes sore throats. It also has antiseptic properties and can help shrink swollen tissues such as swollen sinus passages. It is readily available in throat lozenges, which are a convenient way to take it. You can also drink eucalyptus tea. It is very helpful to steep some eucalyptus in a large pot of boiling water and use it as an inhalant to unblock your nasal passages. The anti-inflammatory properties of peppermint can help to calm the mucous membranes. You may drink peppermint tea or steep the peppermint and breathe in the steam. The scent of peppermint when inhaled helps to ease your breathing. Ginger has long been known to relieve and prevent headaches. It is anti-inflammatory and contains substances that relieve pain. You can take in capsule form as an effective sinus infection treatment regimen.

Herbal or natural remedies for sinusitis are better alternatives to drug medication. However when these types of sinus infection treatments prove to be less effective, you can also consider some over the counter medications that are readily available from your local pharmacies. Oral decongestants are a popular choice for sinus infection treatment. These, like any other medication are better with a doctor's approval if you have high blood pressure, which can be worsened by taking these medicines. Nasal spray decongestants are also an option, and are less of a concern for those with high blood pressure, but they should not be used for longer than three days at a time because they can cause a rebound effect involving constriction of the blood vessels in the nose. Try pain relievers for the pain, pressure, and elevated temperature often associated with sinusitis. Avoid antihistamines. Do not take medicines like Benadryl, Claritin, and Zyrtec unless you know allergies are at least partially responsible for your symptoms. Taking antihistamines simply as sinus infections treatment is not beneficial and could theoretically worsen the congestion because they dry out the mucous membranes in the nose.
