Natural hrt - Is It A Viable Alternative?

With the latest controversy about hormone therapy and its side effects and other concerns about products used to treat menopausal symptoms, is it any wonder that women are seeking out natural alternatives to relieve their discomfort?

The latest "wonder" food for menopause is soy(soya in the UK), which is a little beige bean and the manufacturers have been quick to promote their products as the latest answer to menopausal symptoms. It has certainly been accepted that soy does indeed have mild estrogenic properties and as we know, fluctuating estrogen levels are to blame for many of our symptoms. But is it all good news as far as soy is concerned?

Traditional Asian soy foods such as tofu, miso and tempeh, have been a staple part of the diet in certain parts of the world for many years. Western food manufacturers have now developed protein powders, hot dogs, burgers, cheese, milk, and other convenience foods including soy protein. Companies have created pills from soy phytochemicals and sell them as natural alternatives for relief of menopausal symptoms, or as protection against cancer, heart disease, or osteoporosis.

In the mid 90`s, the cholesterol lowering effect ofsoy milkand its role of heart disease was widely publicised, when the results of clinical studies were published. The results demonstrated that a diet with significant soy protein reduces Total Cholesterol, LDL cholesterol (the "Bad" cholesterol) and Triglycerides.

The average daily consumption in these studies was 47 grams of soy protein, which is a considerable amount and would need careful planning to achieve.

All good so far, but on the down side, it appears that soy phytoestrogens have the estrogenic effect of stimulating the growth of breast cancer cells in tissue cultures. Apparently soy protein stimulate the growth of normal breast cells in much the same way that natural estrogens do. This would add to breast cancer risk if progesterone was not present.

Although there is no conclusive evidence that soy can prevent any diseases, many studies have shown promising results. By including soy products in your diet you will enjoy the health benefits they may bring.
